Hi guys im wanting to make a box from fibreglass and was wondering if anyone on here has any experience with regards to fibreglassing
I want to make the mould from wood for re use purposes is this possible ??
Absolutely, it's possibly the best thing to make it from.
To get a better idea of what you need and how you need to build the mold do you mind me asking what it's for? If you post the dimensions then I'd be happy to do you a drawing so you can work from the plans.
What finish do you need? someone further up the thread suggested you use melamine faced wood, which would be chipboard(normally) but this would leave a mottled effect in the finished article, think of an orange peel but not as pronounced.
The best would be 18mm marine ply, get the best faced ply you can, then you need to prime then rub it down a few times working to a higher grit paper until you have a super smooth surface. Then you will need at least 7 layers of wax before you even start with the Gelcoat, buff each layer to a high gloss, spending this much time will save your time and patience in the long run(believe me it's no fun repairing a mold because it hasn't been prepped properly!).
Also I would like to know if anyone has any knowledge of where to buy fibreglassing materials in bulk .
Sorry, I can't help here.
Cheers,
Martin.
