When I worked in a food factory 15+ years ago we couldn't use wooden handled tools in the production area, so its not a new thing!
I acquired a lump hammer with a broken fibreglass shaft & I replaced it with a length of 1.5" steel pipe, welded on. For the grip I applied a good layer of self amalgamating rubber tape. It's not nice to use but no worse than a fibreglass shafted one.
I keep it as my 'lending' hammer, funny enough it always comes back!
