Fibre optic cable

We live out in the sticks , well a hamlet of about 10 houses...
There is a fibre optic open reach cabinet about 1/2 mile away
There was a company going to do fibre optic cables to replace the copper phone wires , for whatever reason they pulled out
The existing wires are overhead from.a "telegraph pole "

Anyway when they eventually get it done I presume they run the wires overhead again , do they run them all the way to the master socket or whatever the modern equivalent is ?
I'm currently replacing the floors upstairs and was thinking of running some conduit with a draw wire in to a new position where the router will be .
I'm assuming the cable dia is similar to existing phone or cat 5 cable ?

If its cabinet to premise, then they usually dig up the road/pavement and bury it. And usually its a crap subcontractor that makes a right old mess in the process

Ours is overhead line all the way to the house (I'm guessing they replace like for like).

Cables similar size to cat 5. If your going to put ducting in watch the bend radius, it can't be too tight for fibre optic.

Where there is Fibre to the cabinet you tend to get copper overhead wires. But with fibre to the premises then can still just replace the overhead wires with one that has 4 copper cores and a fibre running in between them. Overall thickness is about 6mm. Having it overhead save a load of digging.

If you choose to not have a landline, and those are going away very soon anyway, the overhead cable would be a multi-strand fibre in some tough sheathing with a tension absorbing core to protect the fibres. There is no longer a need for copper since the NTE on fibre doesn’t need the 48 volt power.

We had fibre to the property, all on existing poles

A rival company started installing and I refused to let them dig, based on the state of how they had left other streets

Nearly ended up front page of the local "news" paper but someone chopped a new pole down with a chainsaw a few streets away on the same day

Depends what contractor, virgin media around here goes under the pavement to an outlet at the boundary. Be fibre from the pole overhead to the easiest for the contractor. If you have fibre to the cabinet the existing telephone wires are used.

Untill they upgrade you to "Full Fibre" at which point the existing are replaced with fibre all the way to your router. As per @Domdom post above.

Yes, but they could still take the fibre up the telephone pole or underground to a boundary outlet. We have both on our street it just depends which contractor installs the infrastructure.

We're in a village . when they put fiber in they just replaced the old overheads with the new stuff to small box , then off to the master socket . He would have drawn the fiber through ducting/conduit - if there was any !

Ours is like this, done by contractors for EE. Unlike some they did a good job, the guy doing it was great.

Agree about the crap subcontractor, but they ran ours overhead and clipped the bloomin thing down the middle of the gable wall...

@minimutly that's exactly what I don't want wires run on the outside wall !
When I had the original phone line put in the BT dude wasn't allowed to go in the loft cos it wasn't borded at the time. so I drilled the hole in the gable end and ran the wire thru the loft for him .
The walls are about 18 " thick stone / brick / rubble , so of course his drill bit wasn't long enough !


I'll just have to make sure I'm home when they do come to do it
Defiantly won't be going underground , we don't have a street as such , just houses dotted randomly served from a few wooden telegraph poles .

I'll stick some Flexi conduit in should be on for large radius bends then .

We had full fibre installed a couple of years ago. We're in the middle of nowhere, two houses at the end of the fibre. They essentially ran the fibre the same as copper, mostly up the pole, underground for a verge stretch then up the pole to the house.

The fibre runs on the outside of the house, terminates in a 8" square flat box then goes though the wall to a terminating disc box from which the fibre connects to the OtoE modem.

I'd be surprised if they run the fibre too far in the house. What's the reason for getting the router in a different location?

I have my fibre coming in to the lounge, modem is there and cat6 runs to the router/switch up in the loft. No need to run any fibre internally.

If you make a nice easy run for them, and have a cup of tea ready - I'd imagine they would be only too happy.
You'll also need spare power socket nearby for the ONT equipment, so make sure you have at least one socket spare where you want it terminated.

My fibre came in to a box on the wall which links to the router so I needed 2 power sockets nearby.

This! Years ago, when there was a phone cable fault under our drive (rubbish direct buried cable), I dug a trench and the repair guys ran a proper duct in, rather than replacing like for like. Years later, this made the fibre install much easier, so the digging paid off. The chap installing fibre refused to go onto the flat roof of the garage, so I ended up running that stretch, while he did the rest

Yes that's what mine looks like recently installed although the OR box is a lot smaller and I had to install a power socket near by, ( 1.5 m ) as the power lead is very short.

I normally just put in a decent duct and leave a stainless steel pull cable in everywhere these days ,,, takes a wee bit more time , but it leaves you options later on ,,, same as cat 6 why would you ever only pull one in ?
