I had been thinking similarly
There dont seem to be that many japanese options.
I still prefer the adapted van idea but cant think of any logical reason for it other than it's what I already have.

Nissan do a small van, the NV200. Also available as a mumbus. Quite narrow but look to be roomy for their size. They replaced it with the NV250, their badge engineered version of the Kangoo.

Lots to be thinking about here.
Van based car? or MPV? diesel or petrol? I'm not too worried about resale values as I imagine I'll drive it to death.
Insurance is important I'm a relatively new driver; passed my test three years ago so I think keep HP and CC down, also no desire to go fast.
Citroen Picasso C3 and the other Ciitroen MPV looks a good buy but has it got hydraulic suspension that always seems like something that can go badly wrong with no warning.
VW's seem to bit over budget

sooooo slow there dangerous pulling out on A roads

as for Japanese how about the Toyota hiace

cheap reliable as hell

we have one at work and it’s never needed any work in 6 years

I like the Hiace too, seem well built. Where my brother worked they moved to the small Nissans and they were not popular.

I picked a nice Pug partner 1.6 ATV for him last year, so far it's been great, has higher suspension, underbody protection m & s tyres and off road modes, so never been stuck in rural Argyll.
