FH Brundle & 7.5 metre lengths

Here's my sheet mover. Made from scrap plus a couple of cheap wheels.

I find our local Brundle delivery service (from Southampton) to be excellent. Often I have just left a note on the order to ask them to drag it along our alleyway and leave it against my workshop doors. This has been variously for sheet, bar, rod, angle etc. and has worked well. The other day I had three lengths of angle and a large sheet of GRP platform grid delivered so, because the grid is quite expensive, I made sure I was here to meet the guy when he delivered it. He let me know when he was leaving his previous drop. He turned up in a monster flatbed truck but we got it off and hand carried it down the alleyway together (it was plenty long enough to socially distance!). I am well chuffed with the service and have been for as long as I have been having stuff from them (maybe 7 or 8 years).

Dr Al, have you tried Cotswold Steel at Babdown for box section, they might be able to help you. I don’t know how they would compare on price, I’ve only bought re-bar from them, but it seems reasonable.

I suppose it may depend on where you are, I'm covered by the Ilkeston branch, so they have a bit of a trek down here.

Usually get the same driver using a Brundle lorry, he could talk for England but is an absolute star, backs it up as close as possible and gives you hand to unload it, nothing too much trouble. Had a sub driver once and he was equally pleasent and helpful.
Box and angle you should be able to handle on your own at a pinch depending on the thickness - heaviest I've had is a couple of 7m RSJs which took three of us to unload.

Brill service so far and decent prices, I've been quite happy - and thats rare for me thesedays.

Just use it as an excuse to upgrade your tools*

That load included the requisite steel to make the headstock for the forks which has made things so much easier.

* I realise that this may not be an option for everyone

Tube from brundle was very oily. A petrol soaked cloth hardly touched it, turned black in the first half meter and then just smearing it along. Local place is much more expensive but the tube is clean other than mill scale. Sheet was clean.

When I bought 6 meters of 100x100x10 steel angle recently. Brundles beat all the local suppliers hands down (upto £50 difference) even with a £5 (large Saw) cut fee and £10 for delivery (total inc vat £114)
I had two 3 meter lengths the next day, lifted them off the wagon with the Drivers assistance.

Local suppliers couldn't be arsed to price match for one length ..too much hassle etc

Totally agree, they're very reasonable and especially compared with Mental Supermarket..........................................

For solo handling of full sheets I bend a handy length of rebar into a sort of W shape. The two ends are only a few inches, the middle gets a flat to form the handle. Hook it under the bottom edge and steady the top with your spare arm. To stop a thin sheet from bowing, drop a plank or batten in the bottom first so that it wedges against the material.

all box section i buy is the same black oil all over it and everything it touches! makes painting out if the option really unless its left outside for a week... thankfuly i only really send stuff galved so not too much bother too me, just makes it unpleasent to handle, and smokey to weld!

I've always found Brundles to be very well priced, and the drivers tend to be cheerful enough, except...

I ordered a 10mm sheet that weighed IIRC 180KG. I'd put some sleepers down on the grass ready for it.
Guy turns up with a drop-side, flat bed truck with no hiab... easy enough - he reversed the rear wheels onto the grass (I'm not a bowling-green lawn kind of guy ) and between us we manhandled it and dumped it over the side. More or less on the sleepers and then I cut it on the grass (did I mention the bowling green?).

He also had a 6m I-Beam on the back of the wagon... "where's that going?" I asked? "Back to base - I turned up at the site and there was only one guy there and they didn't have a crane or forklift, so..."
