Still alive. The head came out quite well degreased but no carbon was shifted. Some flash rust was already on the guides as I pulled it out (just in time) and I threw another tablet in there on a cold wash so it didn't smell too bad. Jizer stinks at high temperature! Dremel and brass wire brush on the carbon? I have to weld into the plug thread on one cylinder.

How did I survive? I told her I'd put one of those limescale cleaner tablets in there.

Brass wire brush and careful use of scrapers, pull all the valves and clamp them one at a time between 2 blocks of wood in your vice and de carbonise.

I wouldn't fancy dishwashering a head, paraffin, a wire brush and rag are all I use with some brake cleaner to blast into the nooks and crannies.

The gasket face gets a very gentle wet and dry sand with wd40 and a nice flat block so I can offer it up to a straight edge to see if it needs to be machined .

Just like busses.....you wait for 15 years to find one and then another turns up. Think I might need to blow off a bit of crud before it goes in the washer.

Sadly, it needs a skin and 2 new (unobtainable since the 60's) valves. GS valves??

Just out of curiosity, since one head has been skimmed about 1/4 inch, has anyone ever tried resurfacing an alloy head by that sort of depth? Lots of welding required and no doubt some distortion.

That's a vast amount of metal, I'm guessing it's been done to boost the CR?

More likely it has been skimmed so MANY times it has got down to that level. This new one has lots of screwdriver marks on the face.

Original sidevalve engine was about 5.5:1 and this OHV conversion head, in good/new form took it up to around 8:1 or 9:1 for the competition version. I dread to think what it is up to now!!!

Ah! I don't know is its worth the cost but you can get a decompression plate made up to bring it back, a bit less effort and warping than trying to build that much up with weld!

I read a built thread somewhere (don't remember where though) where someone wanted to reduce CR to increase boooost. He just used a bit of sheet steel fettled by hand and two hgs. Would be very cheap

Hi, Engines of that era had low compression ratios because of low quality fuel, as fuel quality improved manufacturers started raising the CRs to take advantage. Decompression plates are not always needed unless the bottom end can't cope.

Dunno why yous tips wanna live so close to the edge Why not pick up a used cheapy dishwasher off gumtree of what ever you have. I found an as new Bosch for 100 euro. Plus a Laden for free. What does a parts washer cost? prob a bit more than that, AND = Marital harmony...priceless! But then, this would be a poorer place without some who entertain the rest with edge of the seat antics....

More recently, my Mini was running at 12:1, so I used two gaskets to get it down a bit.. Still bust the crank. Was 7000rpm too much for an 850?

Baking Linseed oil bonded casting cores in the oven was not one of my better moves
