faulty subwoofer

Our very nice Acoustic Energy active subwoofer has gone on the blink.
There is a noticeable hum coming from it. This happens even when disconnected from everything.
Also occasionally it will give a loud rumbling crackling noise.
Any ideas? Thinking of possibly buying an internal amp to stick in it.

If it hasn't gone bang and is still powering up, the PA transistors are probably OK, so it would be worth a bit of fault finding. It may well be electrolytic capacitors dried out.

I wouldn't expect a subwoofer amplifier to be freely available, they are different to a normal stereo amplifier in design. If it is scrap, s/h subwoofers are not expensive generally.

I was guessing a dodgy cap was most likely.
There are some Chinese amps available for not a lot. Not high end but a subwoofer mainly just make lots of low frequency noise.
Obviously I would rather fix it if possible. It was a nice bit of kit.

Normally things just hum when they dont know the words ...



Really close look at the input joints too ,,, good weather for drying out solder joints and things moving more than normal as the ambient temps up too.
amps are pence these days , but remember you would ideally want a filter with it ,,, simple passive one would do .
