The black dots just seem to be specks of dirt, nothing seems to have exploded.

Just checked the meter, open circuit- guess it’s dead!Have you checked the meter movement as per post #6, and identified the possible voltage regulator as per post #13?
Some had a weak link, a fusible link at the end of the MCM coil. You may be able to repair that.Just checked the meter, open circuit- guess it’s dead!
