Anybody wanting photos for their family tree and have distant rellies in liverpool? this guys collecting em and showing em,he's still trekking to the libray for em.
Some go back to 1890's

If you buy a copy of Family Tree Maker you usually get 6 months free membership of Ancestry.com thrown in.
Records of BMD only became "law" in 1837, before that you have to start trawling Parish records.
While they're still alive, spend a few hours with parents, grand parents, relatives etc. armed with a notebook and find out what they can remember, include names, places, dates etc. once you have sorted the info the serious research starts.

Bit of a problem there,both sides of my Mothers and Fathers siblings are deceased including my own mother and father,so its trickier but not to overly complicated.

That's the difference between faith and confidence . Evidently that's the reason why Jewish family trees follow the female line .

Ah you mean the doctors writing and signatures.....yeah sites should have translated printed understandable copies in english and the original if you want to view it.

that and the so out of focus images for some records on fiche or micro film, when you start trawling through volumes and volumes of parish registers year after year on these machines your eyes get very tired, wait till you get to the newspapers of days gone by, boy thats fun, good reading material though, it opens your eyes as to what your ancesters had to go through and put up with, and go without.

with ref to paying this subscription fee, ask at your main library what they may have, the birmingham library has the full ancestry.com on the internet computors for free which you are allowed 16hrs a week to use on your library card. The way i do it is use my internet to look up names, dates, possible marriage/birth connections then go to library and use the free access to check if details match right

dont know how far back you are or plan going to, but, the igi index is is good source of info and free

Yeah someone gave me that igi index site,not very good I'm afraid...well not for me it wasn't on both counts of fathers surname and mothers maiden name.

find that most odd because the surnames are correct but then again a couple of other sites have drawn a blank only ancestry.com seems to come up with them so thats gotta be good.
Maybe quite a few sites are pretty slow in getting their info updated?

The igi was the index you used years back, but not all parish records are in it, don`t forget a lot of these modern sites have had people`s research donated to them and are not complete by a long mile but are a very useful tool, most of what ancestry, find my past, your roots etc etc info is, are collections added together, name databases done by people & organisations who are really into this stuff and its still being added to, but what these sites do very well is help cut down time and traveling for the researcher, but more importantly for many a researcher it cuts down years and years of trawling through parish records at churches ,county record offices, library`s, and so on, once you get back 100yrs theirs quite a lot out there still to look at, rate books, poll books, court records, church wardens recording, directory`s,
as you have said its addictive, but dont take what is transcribed for granted, there are many mistakes, the 1901 census has a fair few this started being transcribed in prisons and fell behind so was passed somewhere else, so make your own mind up on that one, i`ll just say 2 of my relatives i have found after going through the micro fiches of original copies street by street in the area i knew they may be, and it was clear the to read, but, not on the index done by the transcribers,
The bmd (gro index) (births,marraige,deaths) on fiche at the library`s & records offices is copy of original bmd ledgers, which these other sites are transcribing from, if your struggling to find either a birth or,marriage,or death check the original, also bare in mind shire boundries have moved over the years

Oh I've already at the very begining found a mispelt mothers maiden name by the transcriber they put a 'T' instead of an 'L' in.

Rather annoying really.

My ex-OH had that problem. She got back to the turn of the 1900's and hit a wall. The surname of "Spittlehouse" had changed to "Spittalhouse"

Ironically, one of her distant ancestors had been "transported to the colonies" for theft. Still makes me laugh, after all these years .

And my struggle is with my paternal grandfather. He served in the Great War as a medic, but all I know is very little. He served in France, on and around the Somme, with, I think, the 3rd West Riding Field Ambulance, but the records were kept at Kew, in London, and a lot of them were destroyed in the blitz of WW2. My Dad always maintained that Cyril was a conscientious objector, but he still wanted to do his bit, so he volunteered for service in late 1914, after lying about his age.

If ever I'm having a bad day, I try to imagine what horrors a 16 year old boy must have gone through, out in the middle of it all trying to rescue his mates, with nothing but a bit of canvas to defend himself with. Puts things into perspective.

You know i don't understand that ancestry site.they give free subscription,you have to subscribe and give your credit card details even though you have bought their cheaper family tree maker CD for three months free access on the BMD files.

I've just made a phone call to them and asked why they want these details when alls they have to do near the end of the free 3 months access they flag up a notice and say do you want to pay a subscription now to access census and other records which where not availble on the free 3 months.

I just dont undestand why they want your CC details,bought the software and still cant access the BMD files unless i supply the details,WTF!

Big con if you ask me.
