I was butt welding various thickness inox 304. And especially at thick sections i observed something annoying, the weld puddle had a 5mm lag behind the tunsten electrode. If i was following a circular motion, the puddle was about 2-3 tenths of a second behind.
Although the most important result of this stubborn behaviour of the arc, was....
When you are over a spot and you want to spread the accumulated filer rod as it forms a ball, the arc doesnt want to leave that mountain spot (neither does the melted filler), you have to really make a walk around the spot if you want to spread the metal evenly, and you have to make a real effort so you can make the arc leave that sweet hot route to earth.
Same thing happened to a wide gap i was trying to fill, it usually eats away one edge of the joint making the gap even larger even if i was moving my electrode over to the other edge, the heat was going to its past spot, which made me exaggerate on the placement of my torch.
I havent heard any advice on this important fact. Any other noticed this ?
I guess the arc likes liquid metal better than cool solid one ?
Or does my inox needs some heavy brushing ?
