It’ll lift the front wheels of the lorry before it snaps the edge of the bin There’s been a couple of times I’ve been watching out of the window to see if they’ll refuse to lift my bin, they’ve never not tipped it and it’s never broken, it’s had some hefty weight in it.

I think the general rule for the edge breaking is if you can shift it, it’ll lift it.

That's one aspect I hadn't actually thought of, but is worth considering. It was something the lady in the Post Office used to mention if I took a heavy parcel in, but they've changed it now so the trollies for the various services are on my side of the counter, and once the paperwork is done I put it in the correct trolley myself.

I'll stop worrying about the weight, I think, on the basis of this and the comment by @jimbo84 above.

I've had the lip of the bin split, and also the sides of bins split. If you look where the lower support lands when they tip a bin, it's half way down the front. Stick a load of weight in the bottom of the bin, and it all acts on the supporting beam, flexing the front of the bin in, and the sides out - cold day and the bin splits, especially if it's an older one.

So now, having forked out for a new bin, if I'm putting heavy stuff in, I stick lightweight stuff in first to bring the heavy stuff up to at least half way where the support beam hits it.

So far, bins still intact, and it's always been tipped - well apart from when they labelled my recycling bin as having no recyclable stuff in (which it didn't) - so I put the label inside it (which probably wasn't recyclable) and put it out again 2 weeks later

I've emailed the council to ask about any other options. They have a "bulky object collection" but they want nearly £50 for 1-3 items, and I'm not paying to get rid of them. I've also asked them what the weight limit in the recycling bin is - not from the point of view of the truck lifting it, but how well the edge of the bin will stand up. I can go to the tip, but my daily is a TT Roadster and there isn't a lot of room in it.

I was going to say I don't use it for carting stuff around, but I did use it to collect some double-glazing units from a skip a few years back. At least the magazines are clean.

I've had a reply from the council, quicker than I expected, saying the maximum weight allowed is 90kg. And also telling me that if I can't get all the magazines into my vehicle I could do separate runs to the tip, which I didn't really need to be told.

I cleared a rental house out. Some years prior the couple had split acrimoniously. He'd moved out but left all his stuff in the shed, boys toys, gaming console stuff and a stack of immoveable grot mags in double bagged oversize rubble bags. When she moved out I just gently said all "his" stuff needs to go. Tbh the majority did.

I managed to sell a lot of the rarer stuff & the cartoon books i kept as a souvenir, The Troubles of Janice by Erich Von Gotha. Proper classics!
The rest was distributed to the guys at the dump & served to grease the palms of industry!

My pick up truck full pales into insignificance compared to a guy who a friend worked with whose collection of grot filled the loft & upstairs. His wife was obese & hadnt been upstairs in 20 years, they had to move to a bungalow & he had a panic at moving all his collection, In the end it took a team of guys & a 7.5 tonner to dump it all.
