The full heat phase in a properly set up compost bin is a bit over 150F , and goes on for a few days.
Get the carbon - nitrogen ratio right, the aeration and moisture levels adequate , and it really does kick off.....

Even my workhorse estate is full of stuff that needs to go back in the garage. I need the estate clear to do a tip run! There's nowhere to put the stuff back in the garage.

I'm debating a "stores". Maybe a wooden shed where no work is done per se. I don't need all my nuts, bolts, screws and washers where I'm working. Ditto my metal off cuts, bits of timber etc.

Maybe a heavily creosoted shed, racks on the walls for the multiple lin bins...

I just keep going round in circles.

That's a bit like me putting up another flat work surface in the shed because the other ones have got too much clutter on them. It doesn't take long for the new one to get cluttered up so there's an A4-sized free space in the centre somewhere.

My shed is purely a "stores", I did try putting a work bench in it many years ago, but it soon had stuff piled on it so now it's just shelving and I use the bench in the garage.

A couple of the good things about moving into the new workshop were firstly having to get everything from the old workshop and two shipping containers into one place. Secondly having to run the business like a grown up, which meant working out costs.

The costs thing threw up a few surprises, one of which was depreciation due to storage costs. So to pick one item, a GSX1100 air cooled engine, for example. Hard to get hold of these days, and consequently worth a few quid whole and more in parts. So lets say £800 as a rough figure. Each one takes up 2 1/4 square feet, and each square foot of workshop space costs me £12:00. So each one of those engines costs £27:00 per year, which means it's losing value/profit by that amount each year.

Then you have to factor in the amount you're losing by not putting something in that space which would actively earn money. At that point the financial foolishness of hanging on to stuff you want but don't need or use becomes blatantly obvious.

Scale that up across everything that's here and the 5 year rule for ownership becomes very important. If I haven't used 'it' for 5 years then it's got to go.

From a personal stuff point of view if you substitute enjoyment for cash the end result is the same. If you haven't had enjoyment from 'it' in 5 years then it's got to go as it's taking up space which could be used to create enjoyment.

Whilst the above calculation can be applied to wives/girlfriends/significant others I'd advise against it as doing so won't end well as the separation costs will likely outweigh the benefits.

Exactly. Continue to expand on storage space, & one never addresses the cause/issue.

Getting shut of crap is the only reasonable path.

Yeah good call. I use a white backdrop for photos but it never dawned on me to take the background to the item.

My only caveat / excuse to that would be that I have often thought "my unit doesn't cost me any less if I keep it half empty." But it's different in a working-for-a-living workshop where you could put something else that either earns you money, or saves you money (for example a tool that means you don't have to sub out jobs).

I did well today, from little acorns, and all that ..........

This morning, I binned two half empty 200ml tins of superglue activator, AND, a half empty 50ml thickened through age pot of superglue


This afternoon, I needed some superglue for a UPVC window frame, so had to buy a replacement pot, and fished the two activators out of the bin

I did some tidying on my electricals workbench and it went well.

Then I came across a couple of abandoned projects and got sidetracked. I worked a while on them but I went back and got some more tidying done.

I now have room on the bench again to work. I've a few tool batteries to repair/refurbish.
