face dressing drill bit???/

what I'm looking for a tool that will dress the face while I'm drilling a hole.
what I'm trying to achieve is to have a round bar drilled and have the face dressed at the same time.
I know there is such a tool but I cannot for the life of me remember the proper name for them?
the hole will be tapped out afterwards.
if you can give me a name or eBay link that would be good.

Spotfacing is the term to search for but could also use counterbore, both are available as sleeves or one piece tools IIRC although a one piece counterbore will make the hole a 2 step op

If you want to do it in one go wouldn't a step drill be the tool?

looks like that the counter bore might not be any good even though its tungsten tip.
according the add it looks like it for wood only am I right.?
step drill is no good.

Yeah, that's woodworking only. Cheapest solution would be to use a piloted counterbore after drilling the hole (first google hit, might be utter tat/expensive for cheap tat etc) i reckon. Stepped twist drills exist but google and the like will only throw up sheet metal step drills and the only sources i'm aware of will be pricey (180* step drills are on next page, won't let me link directly)

A standard piloted counterbore will not work if you want to drill at tapping drill size as the pilot is normally sized for the clearance hole.

In any case, the OP wants to do this as a single operation.

The stepped drills shown have an angle at the step, so won't produce a flat face.

If you really have to do it in one step, you'd need a custom-ground step drill, with the large end the diameter of your spotface, the small end your tapping drill size and a 180 degree point at the interface. Have a look for cutter grinders in your area.

The easy way to do it in two steps is to use a slot drill or centre-cutting endmill to form the flat first and then drill tapping size. You would, however, need a reliable way of relocating the stock between operations if you don't want to change the tools over at every stage.

What's the material of the bar, and how deep and wide does the flat have to be on it?

I've had second thoughts. maybe it might be best to do it in two or three stages,as it doesn't look good trying to do it all in one go.
I google etc but no joy.

1st using a face dresser
2nd centre drill
3rd 6.8 drill for tapping 8mm x 1.25mm thread.
mild steel round bar is 14mm x 30mm in length(once one side is dressed.)
I'm just trying to be self reliance if you know what I mean.

I've been trying to get my head round this but from #11

Do you mean with one end faced,because bar has been rough cut by saw?
If you are drilling/facing the end,then it belongs in a lathe,not a drilling machine.
Face with cross slide,drill with tailstock.

I don't have a lathe and it wouldn't be my worth while in buying one.
the face will have a rough cut (grinder cutting stone)
all I'm looking for is a face dresser. I can centre bore and drill it after that isn't a problem but dressing a face is.

aye ave ya seen the price of them!

this may do the job , the add states not suitable for none ferous metal's.
so it maybe ok for mild steel. I have wrote to the company thats sells them.
