being an ex in the woodwork indusrty you will find Joiners all supply their own gear, i must have thousands and thousands of pounds worth of stuff.However its fair the employer provides "Specialist" stuff. The old Union rule books gave you a list of what you were expected to provide.But a lot depends on the job and the employer and how easy a life you want, I bought a load of Spindle tooling form a bankrupt shopfitters, the company I last worked for got 3 phase elec in, bought a new Spindle, new planer thicknesser, new Sawbench, a considerable investment. Now if you consider the managing directors attitude that all offcuts from a job were paid for by the customer and were deemed scrap They were yours for the asking, + I had free use of the workshop for "home" projects, any special jobs requiring gear and tools I had I didnt think twice to bring them in. So I used Spindle gear i owned for over 13 years. But good working relationships are hard to come by and I appreciated mine. ALL PPE was provided way beyond legal requirments including boots or a boot allowance if you wanted better quality ones,+Boilersuits, teeshirts, sweatshirts goggles/Safety specticles if you wore them, From specsavers.gloves of every desription dissposable suits, hard hats, an endless list.--(all with company Logo on where applicable)
There is a legal obligation for the emplyer to provide you with it, and a legal abligation for you to wear it. If its provided and you dont wear it its not the comapnys fault and all provided stuff should be signed for to safe guard the employer.

Its appalling what has occurred to rates of pay, still its better to be working! were in the country are you can I ask?

Im in essex. This is just outside chelmsford where pay is generally less than that for the same job in Basildon say and more than in Harlow or Braintree.
I used to work in the city, not much dossing on the internet I can tell you. Welding is less stressful and more rewarding even if less money.
I've enjoyed my first week though, not my first two days but every day since has been a learning curve. My welding keeps improving more that I could imagine too, it was good before now it is at a very good standard is say. Still room for improvement in certain positions though.

Supplying your own tools is pretty normal in a trade, plumbers, sparkys, mechanics all buy there own kit. even hairdressers buy there own clippers and scissors.
PPE is a different story. The company is under legal obligation to provide employees with the correct PPE to safely so the job and the employee is under the same obligation to use it and look after it. Tools do cost a fortune and I certainly did not buy all mine in one hit. Buy a little bit from each wage pack, they will soon mount up.

We supply most of our own hand tools, excluding tape measures now- mainly since EN1090 started, no excuse for using dodgy Aldi tapes etc.
PPE is supplied, as and when required.
Handtools, we supply our own, but it is own own choice, there isn't a requirement to do so. Otherwise you end up using junk that is laying around, or scrounging.
Makes life much easier using good quality tools, and the right tools. I built up a fairly substantial tool kit over my first few years of work. There used to a be a 'Tool club' scheme in place where you could buy it on the company account, and pay weekly,also save 17.5%.
I didn't mind doing so, as I use them for my own use as well as at work, and by buying quality tools they last.
Clamps, always been one of the more expensive things. There is plenty of junk clamps kicking around the workshop, but most of us bought a few of our own, decided what we wanted and got a bit of discount. Again, I use these outside of work, so have no hesitation about taking them elsewhere regardless of if they might be needed at work.
A few years ago there was a break in, and I had a good few grands worth of tools taken. It turned out that the insurance only covered £500 of personal tools per employee. In all fairness, the company replaced them for me. Now most of it is elsewhere, as we were moaned at for having so many tools at work.... apparently all we need is a hammer and center punch.
Powertools/Airtools are supplied, shelves with the gear on, get what you need when you need it. 5" Grinders are about the only thing we tend to keep personally, mainly for a life span thing, as its the most used tool. When they die or get damaged a few people used to just put them back and say noting. This doesn't happen so much now.
I went to work for a larger company for a bit, and couldn't believe that 99% of people there had no tools. Every single machine had tool boards, with tapes, squares, mallets, spanners etc.

I've got quite a few of those Kennedy G-Clamps medium and heavy duty from a regular chap at our local carboot he also has Record, Facom, and a couple of other makes I cant recall all still in original paint. Cromwell Industrial Tools do spare feet if you ever need them.
