I'd say that all depends upon the asked price.
I bet you might get a proper Forged steel vice for the same money or very close to that.
I got my 5" for 160 euros

Fabbed vices have been featured in the Lincoln project book.
You have the opportunity to use better steel where needed.

I'd take old cast iron any day, you'll get it cheaper too. My Record No.6 was free...

But a used record. That vice might be ok and you won’t be worried about a dodgy Chinese casting but it will still be unpleasant compared to a uk/euro vice

If you DIY one, you'll have more pride in it than any "old cast iron" one.

It's not always about the money.

I bought a hand fabricated vice in the Philippines some 20 years ago. It was only a tenner, but god knows how many hours work went into manufacturing it. The work would all have been done by hand, gas axe cut, angle grinders, arc welding, with sunglasses, no ear plugs, no googles etc.

I gave it away to someone on here a few weeks ago, I hadn’t used it for a long time but it was still quite serviceable.

Don forget Fortis are a great Vice but as they are not as well known as Record they are cheap, my 100 year old Fortis Unbreakable was £10 at a car boot many years ago, still works fine.

My preferred vices, they made the best woodworking vices, and the 8A & 9 engineers vices were probably the biggest ever made...

I'm still on the lookout for a Woden №9, but my 7A suffices for now.

You can get a reyt big hammer out and bray on things held a steel one with wild abandon, without fear of cracking it.

Not that having a cast iron vice stops me doing that, but I am aware it could end in tears.

I do prefer other brands like
FZA, ARIEX, HEUER.
Solid forged steel construction is my personal preference.
I don't like cast iron vices cause once broken they can't be fixed to original conditions.
And TBH it all depends upon the user.
A cast iron vise might offer better parallelism as there are high quality cast iron vices with prismatic guides and they are great for holding part you have to hand machine like using a file or tap.
On the other hand they make them out of steel too.
And you can hit and abuse as you want even with a sledgehammer without stressing them too much.
A good compromise are those unbreakable vices which are made out of cast steel/ductile iron with a carbon percentage in between steel and cast iron.
I have one they work but they are usually cheap because they are not that precise.
I do still prefer Forged steel

if you knacker a decent make cast iron vice your just an animal and haven't much of a clue. they will take a lot of stick but its knowing how far to go . looking at some of bent bars isnt there any wonder they crack

Yes what I failed to mention in earlier post is my mate bought this last week asked me was it anygood I said time will tell ,like I said it is definitely a copy of the leader vice ,my own vices are a record 110 cast steel ,and a 112 ductile iron record ,then a irwin multi swivel vice for lite use ,but to be fair it is handy vice .

I've got both for free with an old bench

And a 5" forged steel HIT which is rebranded stuff but it's a well built vice in my opinion.
It has replaceable jaw and pipe jaws.
I've paid it 160 euro brand new if mind serves well

I'd like to get one of those for "machinist use" no hammers or grinders, just for filing threading things like that

I'd like one of those too as I think they are pretty useful and just not for round stuff

One of those for smaller and precision stuff

Thankfully I have not enough space or benches so I'm vaccinated for this disease
