those pistons are tiny, i always thought they would be big massive "muckuled hings",
Bear in mind that F1 engines are only 2.5/3 litres in capacity. Looks like an incredibly short stroke, that's why they can rev to 19000 rpm.
I was at a talk given by Al Melling who has designed many engines including for formula 1. He was saying stroke is about 25mm, that was on the V10s.
Multiple spark plugs (4 or 5) to get the fuel to burn quick enough. Pneumatic valves instead of springs to eliminate bounce.
Bearing clearances are so tight that engines need to be pre-heated to even turn over.
He brought a cut-away engine block in to view, very compact and light for a 3 litre.

I love the sculptural qualities of high end engineering. I remember seeing a sculpture on the wall of a restaurant, then realising it was the exhaust headers of a race car. Can I have some please.

I once did a weeks work at WilliamsF1 (who were with BMW at the time) and got chatting to the guys who welded up the exhausts. Apparently each exhaust took about 24 hours to weld. They had an awesome picture of an Inconel exhaust that was so hot you could see through it to read 'BMW Power' printed on the engine block behind!
The quality and attention to detail is amazing on these things. A couple of years ago i pop out to see a man about an Al casting that needs repairing, walk into his workshop and find out he restores/hillclimbs old F1 cars- spent a couple of hours pawing everything and absorbing the details. Should have taken more pics...

I wish i'd taken more (was all a bit of a surprise- i was just asked if i could repair a casting at short notice), as well as the car pictured there were a couple of grounds effects Arrows tucked away and a turbo era BWM engine in bits (with huuuuge turbo)

I guess it's not all that suprising really, IIRC back when the Ford Focus WRC was introduced i read something about the problems they were having due to the exhaust gas temps... parts melting or taking a 'set' upon cooling and having to be replaced and they ended up using some really exotic alloy and cladding with manifolds running to 5 figures!!

I guess it's not all that suprising really, IIRC back when the Ford Focus WRC was introduced i read something about the problems they were having due to the exhaust gas temps... parts melting or taking a 'set' upon cooling and having to be replaced and they ended up using some really exotic alloy and cladding with manifolds running to 5 figures!!As I remember it they were running the exhaust temp only about 100 degrees or so below the melting point of Inconel so I guess heat probably was an issue! 
I remember the price of the stuff they'd bought because the guy said they weren't even sure they'd be able to make it into tubes as it might be too brittle! Even bog standard bolts were a tenner a pop. Each and every one has a code. If something goes wrong they can trace back through the history to see how it was made, when, where, batch of material it came from, you name it.
Wish they hadn't banned the use of the ground effect. That really spiced things up!

Yeah. Amazing amounts of money...
From the look of those heads, they would have taken hours (if not days!) on the CNC mill!
And think of the original billet! Soooo much swarf!

I used to watch them put massive egg-shaped (ish) billets into the CNC lathes, it takes some imagination to connect them with the delicate wheel hubs that came out! That was working on Open wheel Indy cars.
According to Mr Melling again, Ferrari were producing their engine blocks my spark erosion, taking about 12 months each until a short while ago.

I gather they all[F1 teams] have Matsuura 63V mills. If you look on youtube you can find a Matsuura machining a V8 block, the bloke who posted about this on the cnc forums had programmed it for a demo at a machine tool show and the block took something like 42 hours. I think the rules of F1 are a cast block. Unlike F1 blocks, topfuel blocks are billet, so is the bugatti veyron. Look up W16 block on youtube for a vid of it being machined. There is also a vid of the veyron engine being assembled.
