extractor fan

fitting a new extractor fan in the bath room .
the old not working.
the problem is that the old one has 3 wires going into it where as the new one only two.
brown wire is live and the other two is not.
when I turn the light on they're all dead?
is this how it suppose to work?
the brown wire is live till I turn the light switch on then neither of them are live.
the old one is air vent.

so the question is which wire to use or have I got the wrong one?

Extractor normally has an isolator outside the room

Will have L&N for power and a L feed from the light so when light turns off timer starts running.

Happy to be corrected by a sparks

did the old one ever work?
on the wire ones one is switched live and one is permenat live so it can run on after light is switched off, some have a humistat to which uses the permanant live.
As said do u have a isolator switch out side or in the loft?

The brown should be permanent live, black is the neutral and the red is the switched live, when you turn the light on the fan will start and run, when you turn the light off the fan will continue to run for the timed period, if your new fan has only 2 wires its not timed so you should just be able to use the black and red and seal the brown off

you need to get your glasses on

then read correctly

as its a bathroom you would need a timer fan not a normal fan

unless you want it to work only when the light is on
