Has anyone fitted snow chains to a ride on mower,does it strain the transmission to a wrecking level,asking on behalf of my kids,lol.

Speaking just for myself, but I usually don’t mow grass in the snow…

Swap the grass tyres for chevron type tractor tyres.
But it will be inclined to leave tyre marks on the lawn.

Motorbike. Car, Caravan. Strong 4 ply rubber. Fitted with a standard 3 stud silver wheel rim. This wheel tyre combo has no innertube but one can be fitted should it be required in the future. Motorbike, Scooter Parts.

Will probably be a pretty cheap and effective route to better traction.

Yea, they are bound to be terrible quality but cheap enough to mess about with and probably last long enough to get bored.

Re the drive train, it might be ok. But it might break it or something else might give up. Different machines probably have different weak bits. I abused one once that tore its rear axel from the chassis. But I think that was down to repeated chassis twisting rather than towing too much.

I've abused a few and not broken any, towed plenty of heavy stuff but they don't like too much weight on the axle as that snaps them

You shouldn’t cause any issues by simply having grip. What wrecks stuff is slipping and then finding grip.

I would find some tyres with decent cleats on rather than running chains, and run them a bit softer

As above, swap to tyres with chunky tread pattern. My mower is fitted with wide slicks - done to avoid marking the grass not to protect the drivetrain.

For a DIY proof proof of concept, see you-tube "cutting treads into slick tyres" videos ... if you can borrow a tread cutting machine (or want to try using a circular saw set for a shallow cut and fitted with a rough blade) see if you can cut a diamond pattern tread yourself?
** Ask around / wait for comments before tying anything diy, I've not tried myself but it was a thought...

Top tip - check if there is a way to top up the oil in the axle before adding extra loading (grippy tyres). I thought the axle on mine was scrap due to a noisy diff - adding oil fixed the "problem"..

You could remove the tyres and weld on some angle iron across the rim.

Would have grip but it would be a bumpy ride.

Nope, been there. They’re fine in the right places, my beat ain’t the right place for one. To low and wouldn’t fit where I need to go
