External electric supply to house

Thank you all for your help.
I can now confirm that there is only 1 cable going IN to the box.
Due to your comments I plucked up the courage to open the mcb which was labelled.
My fear of electricity might seem a bit over the top to some of you but my nephew aged 19 managed to electrocute himself many years ago- and it has always stuck with me.

If you're not sure, best to keep away with electricity.

Domestic single-phase overhead service alteration including overhead line,
connection up to 10 metres. Assumes no additional pole required.

£871.25 +vat for northern power grid. Which is their lowest/standard charge.

It's what it'd cost us to replace our meter box, plus the box and electrician cost on top. Ruinously expensive but it is live work.

I'm still waiting on the final quote, but we had an estimate of £5,000 to have 3 phase brought down the pole (in corner of our garden) and into a cabinet at the bottom of the pole

plus... £990 cost for them to quote us!

there's 3 phase on the pole already, pole only supplies 5 houses


I expected a decent bill, £5k doesn’t shock me... the £990 bill for the quote is a bit of a kick in the teeth


we'll have 4kw per phase export limit.... we can ask for more later but that's a new quote, they won't do it all in one!

990 for a quote is taking the michael. Id query that especially if you have more than one pole on your land ….check for way leaves, they are really helpful if there isnt one, and you suggest they move the poles!

Or is it one of these deals where you get the £990 refunded if you have the job done by them ? Still seem a bit much though, given it doesn't appear to be a complicated job.

it was £10k at work for a 400amp supply (upgrade from 100amp) for them to run a cable from the pavement on the other side of the road, under the road/pavement and 2ft inside the building

more insulting... it was £7k at first, which I paid (non refundable)

but then they decided the road was too busy so they'd have to do it on a weekend - extra £3k please (remember 7k already paid non refundable!)


we needed it so had no choice... but that could have caught a lot of people out :-o

brother has a pole in his garden and could get a couple of quid a year or a lifetime one off payment

Ive two poles, no way leave as the original deal was made before the farm was split up, so next door get the money, for about 15 poles, but I get nowt. As for 4kw export, if your going solar you want lots of battery so you rarely export.

going with loads of solar and loads of batteries... but will have excess power in all but dead of winter

if I can increase the esport limit we can store the power to export at peak times for the higher £/kwh rate

Unless it's a really small system and you're a really heavy user you're going to be exporting in Summer. Our export often exceeds 40kWh in a day, the battery serves to smooth that out by absorbing the peaks when generation exceeds export limit or inverter output.
