External electric supply to house

We are thinking about moving our external electric supply to the house.
National grid have asked us how many cables are entering the box.
I have attached a photo.
Can anyone please help by telling me what the components inside the box are and if the cables are incoming or outgoing?

Bottom left is the incomer from the DNO going into the cut out fuse, 2 grey cables from the cut out go to meter top left, 2 more grey cables out of the meter into the main switch bottom right with black cable coming out of the bottom to your CU (fusebox)

Id agree, except there is what looks like a grey pair coming out the top of the main switch and out the right hand side of the cabinet. Plus the black one out of the bottom.

can you see any cables outside of it?

I assume they're checking to see if you have a looped supply, where power comes into your box then out again to next door

Not sure about 2 way. Inside the house there is a consumer unit which controls the inside of the house.

To be honest, I’m scared of electric as I can’t see it.
I guess it’s ok to flick up each of the 2 switches and see if the garage or supply to the house fails? I will let you know when I get chance to do so. Thank you.

Id sit down to read the price……I had a quote to move an over head line, and put in the ground. Me doing all the digging and laying conduit etc.

I still have an overhead line!

This is what I am doing ATM. Its not very clear, but you can see the black power cable in the centre of the picture leading to the power pole at the end of the garden.
It needs moving over to the left of the road works sign, to go outside of the foundations for the new semi underground extension. There is not enough length in the cable for me to move it, so it needs about 3 metres of cable let in. This will be temporary, so would have to pay again later

We have been quoted £4.5K. I assume that includes them making a new cut for the cable.

Any clues as to how much of a shock?

Domestic single-phase overhead service alteration including overhead line,
connection up to 10 metres. Assumes no additional pole required.

£871.25 +vat for northern power grid. Which is their lowest/standard charge.

It's what it'd cost us to replace our meter box, plus the box and electrician cost on top. Ruinously expensive but it is live work.
