Explaining your hobby to neighbours

Wow it seems like everyone has bad neighbours on here I have a 8 year old that makes more noise then I do with the grinder or compressor and if one of my neighbours complained the pit bull sorry mean wife would give them hell

Ok , but you didn't go to explain the reason why the radio ham affected the lifeboat radio. Which end was the "deficiency" at? Very often, it's at the receiver end, where it does have not adequate ability to reject strong signals outside of its intended coverage. How was the problem sorted out?

I just buy a houses at least 1/2 mile from anyone.....last 2 houses no real problems......
norm have a big f off gate thats perm closed.....also dogs running loose....
wife tells the locals I have people problems and very private......
it's great u dont get any/many visitors......
I got a bollockxxg for cutting my grass on a Sunday by the Mayor, front meadow 1.5acres.....
I told him in my best Fronglais, when he stops the church bell ringing at 8am I'll stop cutting grass on a Sunday...
now EF off...funny they understand that bit o English.....hahaha.....

The LPA don't object to folk running a business from home so long as it doesn't have an impact on the neighbours, a mate of mine has a machine shop in his garden, its very well insulated and from the outside you cant hear anything. Its only lathes/mills etc but typical of what's acceptable. Grinding, spraying and hammering metal in the open will wind up the neighbours

I think it's 'An Englishman's Castle' effect, what I do in my home is up to me, however, if someone else doing what they want in their home might affect me...

I think it is a phenomenon I have witnessed multiple times here i the UK. It manifests itself in the form of jealousy. "I am not doing that, I can't do that so why should she/he be allowed to do it, I will soon stop that" etc.

In the US we used to hang out on the street corner on a Friday waiting for our paychecks and you would see the big Caddy go by. "Wonder who that is, wonder where he is, maybe we could hook up and a bit will rub off, we can all have a slice!"

Here in the UK.............. Porsche goes by----- "Wonder who that is, wonder where he parks that, we can go 'round tonight and nick it!"

Seen it many, many times.

I've got a big garage which could be considered a commercial workshop (it isnt), Built with planning permission which I work in when I please, far enough from neighbours boundary. I don't make a noise at all hours of the night or cause annoyance, unless Ken Bruce's pop master counts? I'm not disturbing anyone and get no hassle.

thats just it, a lot of the time you dont need to disturb anyone to get complaints. I got complained about when i stopped working on neighbours cars.
Then a git from 5 houses up who cant even see my cony complained about it so council came out. said i had to pull it down or get PP, which i thought i hadnt as i went by the book but the part Building towards a highway` i thought it meant a highway/main road, not a cul de sac or footpath as they are classed as highways in planning. so it prob peeed him off i got it but still cost me £350 to get PP.

This is typical. Quite a few years back in England, wife caught some scrotes jumping on the roof of a posh car. She told them to stop it and they just replied it was his fault for buying it.

RE working at home, I spoke with council and they didn’t seem too worried. They looked at what I do with regard to noise, fire etc etc and that was it really. I always have the workshop door shut when I’m being noisy but the neighbours have said they never hear me. Human ones are 100yds away. Nearest ones are sheep so they don’t count.
I try to have a bit of give and take but you always get one a-hole. I tend to keep myself to myself in terms of being specific about what I do here. If people don’t know what you do it’s harder to make an exact complaint.

That aside we have a new neighbour in the bay and it’s less than a 1/2 mile ofFshore. A drilling rig. The top drive has been running all night so that’s going to get boring quickly!

As OP isn’t running a business I’d think he’s nowt to worry about. Probably have more hastle with content insurance than council. Only problem he has is proving a negative. How do you prove you’re not doing something?!

No that would be serving some purpose. They ‘stack’ them here over winter as it’s sheltered water. It’s just being maintained or whatever it is they’re doing to it. There will be 4 more by the end of next month.

all i can say is think yourself lucky its a rear shed and not a front shed like mine though i also have a rear shed as well

what an absolute nightmare some neighbours can be, i’m reyt lucky with mine, by chance he happens to be a petrol head and is restoring a westfield so we’re on the same page!


makes me think though, maybe. we should all pool our money together to buy and island? migweldia? or something along those lines? With plenty of pubs, houses required by law to have a double garage at the least, communal welders and lathes and so on, how hard can it be?

all it needs is a change to the planning laws make it simple to follow and one rule fits all

but no that dosnt happen

thats why you see buildings built right up to the boundary and stuff your neighbours with guttering edge being used as the boundary line and yet they expect to come onto your land for repairs like hell you are doing that you built it repair it on your own land

a slight rule change if you start the complaint you pay for it

in another words im taking you to court to repair my property as i built it right up to the boundary line
well you pay for it then because you was being greedy left no access to maintain your own property

older propertys have issues easily changed by wording on them as access is needed to maintain the propertys

no more land grabbers in the uk scotland dosnt have it as much but england does scotland you have to inform the owner of the land here in england is grab it and you take me to court and i will win due to me having alot of money as i will swamp you with solicitors letters
