In my expert pratting around with my land rover I managed to cause a either a backfire or an explosion in the recently fitted backbox, it hasn't been off the drive . It is a standard petrol landy , after my expertly conducted fiddling I put my hand over the exhaust, the car continued to run happily as the rolled seam on the back box emitted all of the exhaust gasses readily, Q , is it possible to reseal without weld , I no longer have a mig, still to miffed to get under it and remove it ,

Do you mean the seam that runs the length of the back box ?
Or do you mean the seam that runs around the end of the cylinder of the back box at each end?

Are you aware that the back box ( 562731 ) is less then £30 for a mild steel one ?

Along the length, the back box is new , not even got off the drive , it was a Britpart el cheapo ,exactly that in your link ,

I run the Britpart el cheapo exhausts on mine.
Get at least five years out of them, ( petrol engine and plenty of muddy off road work ) .

I had an exhaust go in the manner yours has ( not on a Land Rover ).
In that case I was able to carefully re tighten the crimped joint by taking the exhaust off the car,
using a ratchet strap to pull the two sides of the seam joint together so they could be persuaded together,
then tighten the joint as best I could with a mixture of slip joint pliers, tyre lever and hammer.
Got it as tight as I could and refitted it to the car.
Got the rest of the winter out of it.

I was very skint then.
Now I would just replace the box.

Although a lot of Britpart stuff is very poor quality, This was probably caused by unburnt fuel in the exhaust box. Is it hard to start ? Were you cranking it over for a long time ? Does it have a misfire ?

Unless the exhaust box itself is blocked, I doubt if you will get anywhere with a claim.

Noone ever gets anywhere with a Britpart claim though anyway . The warranty is worth less than the shoddy rubbish they peddle and certainly less use.

Years ago you would turn the ignition off while in gear then turn it back on for a loud backfire or to rupture the muffler.

I will be removing it today and either repairing it or binning it , will try to find a replacement that isn't Britpart,

To be fair I don't think there are many silencers that would hold up to an internal explosion, most of this aftermarket gear rolls off the same production lines.

I had a Eurocarparts exhaust fail. Something, the cat maybe just became detached inside and would slide around sounding like a brick. Exchanged no issue.

Managed to blow up the back box on my 1980 honda civic. Replaced the head gasket by the side of the road without a a manual or any know how and managed to get the ignition timing way off. The back box peeled open like a cartoon explosion. I hammered it back together and rivetted some tin over it.

This was one of the delights of my youth. I had a little Bedford HA van, and I used to do this quite often.

On the way home from work, there was a long sweeping left hand bend. On the left was a ranch style fence, and there would often be about six horses leaning over it to get at the grass on the verge. How I enjoyed scaring them so they galloped off to the far side of the field.

Also crowded bus stops was a favourite.

In all the times I did this though, it never once ruptured the exhaust box or pipe.

The exhaust was damaged by Rosinante making a mistake.
Not by faulty manufacture.

Claim on the warranty if new.

So the fix for the issue is to commit Fraud ... !

In my youth I used to do similar on my XT500.
At the south of the Isle of Man, there is a downhill road surrounded by Headlands to the Cafe at the Sound of Man.
Big handfull of throttle, Kill Switch to Off, roll down the hill.
Kill Switch to On.
BOOM!
Echos back off the headlands
Small rainfall of Cream Teas from the startled Oldies at the Cafe.
Leave rapidly giggling.

I didn't want to replace the back box on my old RR as I wanted to fit a stainless system so to get through the MOT I cut a piece of galv sheet to cover the holes, some exhaust paste to seal it and some jubilee banding to hold it in place.
