exhaust repair, stainless

hi

got a friend asking for an urgent favour.

an exhaust bracket has broken on his classic car. The exhaust system is stainless

si basically he has a tour on Monday and needs the exhaust fixing asap but I have no stainless filler rod to TIG it.

can I get away with using mild steel filler rod just to get the repair done. And if so how long would the repair last for?

It wouldn't be a problem but it will rust, that's all.

depends how particular he is! I wouldn't do it on my own good cars but if he dont mind if it only lasts 4 years or something like that then i suppose you could do it, ive seen mild steel migged on stainless crack but it was on a manifold and it was a poor manifold at that. it will rust faster because of the galvanic action iirc and dilute the parent metals corrosion resistance too

ah that's good then. I did tell him it wouldn't last as long... But he isn't too bothered as the exhaust system is quite an age already.

so if it lasts a year or so then it will be fine

Stick a magnet on it. The system could be chrome steel (409) in which case it should be welded with a dissimilar rod (309),
otherwise weld with stainless filler. (308 / 316 etc)

Stainless mig wire will do it, twist thin bits together if it's too fine.
