Firegum's always worked for me - as said above, making sure the joint is fitted properly is key. It's designed to go on joints that clamp solid, not ones that are designed to flex. So the exhaust needs to be free of bending stresses at the joint so it doesn't open and close more than the paste can handle as the chassis flexes. Also ensure the joints are free from grease and soot - I usually run a bit of sandpaper round to clean the surfaces. If it's a joint that needs to flex, use the compressed wire wool type gaskets.
Silicone RTV is fine near the back section where it's not too hot, but anywhere near the cat or front and it tends to fail. On some of my cars I've had the exhaust glowing to about a metre beyond the cat after a couple of laps on track days - RTV's not meant to handle those kind of temperatures
