They sell different grades so some will last ten years some won’tAdvice/information wanted...
Anyone come across them in work or for pleasure use, what are they like for quality/use (I believe they're Taiwanese) and for spare parts availability?
Thank you all for your input, I went to look at the lathe today, as a second or replacement lathe for my Harrison, its a 2000 year model, the original company that owned it went bust in 2009, the person selling it appears to have owned it for the last 8 year but never used it.
He has another 240 volt lathe and never converted the Excel from 3ph, it appears to be in good condition no major play the the carriage or signs of wear on the bed.
I'm now waiting for more info from the importer...
My lathe has a two speed motor, on a static phase convertor it only runs on the lower speed. But with idler motor too itll run in both speeds.I believe the reason the current owner has not used the lathe is that it has a 3ph 2 speed motor motor which rules out cheap vfd's.
Old excel gear was made in Coventry I believe, and was excellent quality. I had an Excel filing machine from the fifties or sixties and it was superbly built. Much sought after now.
Fortunately I have mains 3 phase, so that's not a problem. My lathe has a two speed motor, on a static phase convertor it only runs on the lower speed. But with idler motor too itll run in both speeds.
But its a good reason to knock the price down if you want the lathe
