I am having one of thoise days when I will kill the wife if she does not shut up while I sort this....chunter chunter chunter.....arrrggg

AnywayI know its simple as I have done it a few times before but it eludes me now.

I have 3 columns. 1 Outgoing. 2 Incoming and 3 Balance.

I need the formula to put in the 3rd column to take away either a negative value in 1st column or add the positive value in the 2nd column and give me a running balance.

Long shot if the computer gurus pick this up in time but heres hoping...

Is it not just a+b , the negative numbers should take care of themselves?

=C2-A3+B3

(a is outgoing, bis is incoming, c is balance)

so you take the balance from the cell above, minus outgoing, add incoming

your first row needs the starting balance in, leave the incoming/outgoing cells blank on that one

I used to do
A1 Money in
B1 Money out
C1 Total
Running subtotal formula was A1-B1
Total at the bottom had the formula =SUM(C1:C20)

that won't give you a running balance down down column C... which I think is what he's after ?

Put this in cell C2

=SUM(A2+(-B2))

then this in C3 and drag it down.

=INDIRECT(ADDRESS(ROW()-1,COLUMN()))+A3+(-B3)

=C2-A3+B3

gives the same end result, and it much simpler/easier, especially for someone who knows exce but is stuck / is having a bad day ?

=H2-F3+G3 is what I ended up using chaps... I remembered
it a few mins after I posted but I was so stressed I kept making mistakes data checking....arggg.

I am fine now thanks to some fine Pendle ale from Aldi

I found a basic way of doing similar on you tube and it jogged my memory...I think the part that confused me was the blank cells have no effect but make it easy to repeat and drag formula...
