If I have a tig with a 8-pole control socket can I plug a 5-pin torch into it?

Which ewm machine is it because ewm use a 5 pin tuchel plugs and sockets.
For the torch on/off control it’s just pins 1 and 2

Sorry, that was a bit vague,

I ment, are the plugs like DIN plugs where a 3 or 5 pin plug will fit into a 7pin socket for example.

If I had an 8pin socket on my welder and bought another torch with a 5pin plug will the 5pin plug fit into the 8 pin socket or will I need to change the plug to a 8 pin?
So I would only connect pins 1&2 but I would have to buy the plug!

You would have to buy the plug suitable for your welder or if you have several welders that you wish to use the torch on then you could buy a plug to suit each welder and sockets to suit the torch and make up a couple of short adapter leads.

I thought that might be the case!
It's only because a mate of mine has a small torch that I thought would be handy for the price but looks like it will need a plug change which will make it expensive for what it is!

Note- I am talking specifically about an ewm, if you look on the website the same machine is supplied with either 5, 8 or 12 pin socket. I thought they might have been clever with the plugs so they were downwards compatible!

Well I can't be 100% sure and someone more familiar with EWM Tigs may know differently, maybe @Jim Davey would chime in.

I will see if I can find some part numbers for the sockets, might be able to work out something from that?

I know there are a couple of types of amphenol connectors, DIN connectors, and at least one other type that I can't remember where you can plug any plug in providing it has less(or the same) poles than the socket

All the ewm tigs I know of simply use the 5 pin tuchel plug. It’s a common plug used on Lorch and Lincoln and probably other sets as well. Cheap copies are available if price is a problem. I certainly wouldn’t say they were expensive. Even the genuine ones are reasonable. Just buy the plug and fit it to your torch.

I will have to check but I thought mine had an 8pin?

Just looked on the ewm website and they do a converter to connect the 5p to an 8p so it does not look like they are comparable.

I will see if I can find the bits to make up a converter cable

Sure your not referring to the pedal socket? That’s probably about 8 pins. What ewm do you have?
Why make up a converter socket? Surely it’s easier and a neater solution to just put on the correct plug? I’m not really understanding the complexity of this. That’s the thing about making a preferred torch suit a machine. I’ve done it with mine. You buy and fit the plug.

You might be right. It was pretty late when I was looking at it!
Although I think the pedal socket is a 20pin?

I was only thinking of making up the convertor as most of the torches I see with plugs on are 5 pin ones. I haven't looked at the price of the 8 pin plugs but I think I'm going to go and count my pins again first!

The 8 pole socket is for remote torches to connect mainly. The cheapest option would be to buy the conversion cable (or make it if you can). Alternatively you can convert the socket on the panel of the machine to 5 pole. If you have a Picotig or tetrix machine, you can actually use a standard torch and have an up/ down control, by selecting a different torch mode in the "Expert Menu" of the machine. Look it up in the manual

Pretty sure the plugs are all SOURIAU, I baulked at the £50.00 I paid for my first torch plug, so did some research £12.50 from Farnel
