@nickk What machine are you using ??
I think you find it's what the shape and size of the "dogs" on the front of the spindle that can cause issues.
Also what the drawbar set up is (is it interchangeable easily for instance) ?? UNC / Whit or Metric.
Length of draw bar could also be an issue also ..so @Agroshield response is quite apt

Bewildered,mines 5/8” bsw,no problem with drawbar lengths,that’s easily rectified,and the dogs if you were desperate,but the taper ,well that’s more of a problem.

I'd check with EW I suspect the draw bar thread is M16, So maybe a new drawbar could be knocked up ?? The taper I am pretty sure is the same (ISO/INT/CAT/NMTB) but it's length of drawbar for engagement.
Maybe buy one get all the variables discussed sorted and if your happy with the results you then can use EW and others with impunity

Yes, the taper of BT40 is the same as 40 INT, 7 in 24 on dia. Any tooling with '40' in the name will have the same taper.

No, it is not the same, as the drawbar end and the flange end differ. I believe it is only the lower end of the flange that differs. BT40 is made for a tool gripper for auto-change. The upper end with slots for drive dogs is the same.

Maybe it will fit depending on your particular drawbar, of which you gave no details. If it is a captive drawbar, it will not fit. If your ceiling is too low to remove the drawbar, it may be too much hassle to tilt the head to change drawbars. Maybe you do not want to spend the time making another drawbar (you are most unlikely to find BT40 in BSW thread. It is too old and too-UK-specific).

40 taper tooling is the most common of all the INT tapers, so stuff that will fit better should not be difficult to find. You have to try various combinations of 40 INT, 40 international, ISO 40, 40 ISO, SK 40. Ebay with 'worldwide' set is a good place to start if only to find the various names by which the stuff goes.

Because CAT/BT etc tooling do not have the extended part on the end, for the thread that the Int holders have, you can make a male/female extension up with threads suitable for the tooling and your drawbar.

Just make very sure that there is no way this can unscrew from the tool before the drawbar unscrews from it.
