Yes, clear water pumps or flows off the top, and goes off down the garden, the sludge anaerobically breaks down, in the septic tank.

We've a 3000 litre septic tank, all our sinks, toilets, showers, empty into it, I chuck a sachet of stuff down the loo, every Sunday, never had any issues, it'll probably go horribly wrong next week, now I've mentioned it.

I was once riding in heavy rain along the M56 towards Manchester on an uphill section.
In the distance I saw a man running towards me in the fast lane.
Then I saw the fibreglass septic tank rolling down the fast lane he was chasing.
Must have come off the back of his lorry which was sort of "parked" in lane one and the hard shoulder.
I think he was having a ****e day...

But seriously they work extremely well if kept in good order, they usually consist of two tanks, mainly solids in the first with liquids flowing over to the second where more settlement occurs and a dip tube allows liquid to flow into a soakaway or herringbone drainage pipes.

Most problems occur with blockage in the drainage side and the tank very quickly fills up with liquid. Everything goes into ours including rainwater run-off and yet only needs emptying every 10 years or so.

Most were built in Sunderland. Though assembled in other locations. Doxford went bump because they didnt license their designs to be built overseas, especially in the far easy
