Evaporust

I just wondered if any other contributors had any experience of this supposedly wonder product.

My brother has an Emco Maximat V10P which he uses for motorbike restoration. His workshop is in a shed, which is nicely lined out inside. Anyway long story short, his Emco rotary table and Emco change wheels had gone a bit rusty. So he decided to try Evaporust, usually he uses De Ox C which is citric acid.

So the stuff took the rust off but also blackened the steel, which he'll now have to clean off somehow. The parts were left in for the recommended time period. So basically he is not impressed whatever with Evaporust. I can't actually tell you what he said about it or my post will be censored.

Anybody else have this kind of experience?

I have used it a fair bit on machine parts, I have not had that issue. I use it in a heated tank and usually blow the parts off with compressed air so they dry quick.

I think I have had that effect when the fluid has been well used and not hot enough. I am generally happy with it.

It’s part of the chemistry rust has to be converted to something else.
Soft wire brush or something light. Then oil

Citric acid does exactly the same thing, bit of a pain to be honest but it does come off easily enough.

I have not owned any of it my self.

But have seen the results of it use with friend projects I was involved in.

The first time was on a fire Damaged Fordson. The steel parts were soaked and it came ou ok.
Need a jet wash and a like scrub, but did ok.

The second time.
I think the prep was poor, it didn't seam to do a good job.

The black finish we had soon jet washed off. but not if we let it dry.

The last time was on a Motor casing.

It did an average job. Again I think it was not warm enough. But the second attempt was Ok.

It is like a lot of this rust removers, it doesn't always do what it says on the tin.

It gained it's fame by sponersing a Lot of UTubers.

Hi, I used white vinegar the other day on a saw blade and it left a dark finish which came off with wire wool. So I think it's just a part of the process of rust removal, it's the same with electrolysis.

Red oxide to black oxide.

That's is what most, if not all the converters do.

Yes I get that. Chelating is how Evaporust works. So a molecule in the evaporust bonds with the iron in the iron oxide, taking it into solution.

Leaving behind the black substance I suppose. No Nobel Chemistry prize for me.

I've used citric acid before and I've not seen it leave a tarnish though, which is odd given what the rest say.

Got to say Re evaporust, if you have to wire brush the residue off, might as well wirebrush the rust off in the first place.

The results:-

Rust gone but has left a black stain.

After scotchbrite to remove the black stain, tide mark left behind, like etching.

Didn't even take all the rust off. The verdict is waste of money, back to citric acid.

I was quite happy with it, some parts from my fobco rebuild:

I forgot to mention that step yes, and dried them straight away.

I think that is necessary to stop the chemical reaction, "chelation" if that is the right word. So I think it was not the right product to use for spot rust removal on a complete assembly like a rotary table.
