Anyone recommend a budget mig with euro torch..thinking maybe go for the clarke vat free option then retro fit a euro torch at a later date after probably work out at £280..
+1. Very happy with my GYS 162.
I always remove the torch for storage, due to space issues. I just disconnect the torch and cut the wire and leave it protruding by 10mm. The wire left in torch is either discarded or saved for hanging parts for spraying etc.
I would have thought the cost of waste from a 5kg reel is minimal for anyone other than heavy users, who I would have thought wouldn't be removing the torch every day.
You physically have to remove the wire, I just cut the blob off at the torch end and wind the wire back on the drum, no sense in wasting 3m of good wire.
Never thought of that. I'll bet that adds up to a few miles of wire over the years, for those that MIG a lot.
My Father was even more frugal, our original Cebora Mig only took 5kg drums and once we had 3 spare he started rewinding them from a 15kg drum by hand on the lathe!![]()
My first MIG was a little 100 amp one, used small reels. Since I couldn't buy them where I lived, I used to load them from a 15kg. Used a variable speed drill to power the little drum and braked the big one with a gloved hand. It only went wrong a few times.....Tried that but just made a mess! Perhaps needed more tension when winding it
