Necrothread, but since it's surfaced, I still play a bit of unreal tournament. Not that many of us left, and quite a few are in their 50s and 60s now...

Unreal was an amazing game when it first came out, real impressive cutting edge stuff.

I downloaded a pc based version a couple of years ago, and it looked incredibly dated. Rather disappointing actually.

Try the 2004 version (tricky now epic have pulled it from their store). It is amazingly pretty for a 20 year old game.

The new version (ut4) was in alpha release and looked and played well, with active community development, but they killed that too. There are still ways to play, but Epic games do seem to have sadly turned their back on the gamers and the games that made them

I had a brand new tower PC, 4gb hard drive, real cutting edge, but I had to upgrade the video card to play Unreal properly. Late nineties that was.

I vague remember there was some editing capability with the game, you could actually modify it or even create your own game play.

Yup, Unreal shipped in '98 and the first Unreal Tournament launched in '99. I played both at the time, but UT is what I really got into.
It came with an editor and a scripting system, and had not only was modification allowed, it was pretty much encouraged.
Most of the best add-ons and maps were made by the community.

The game was really just a showcase for the game engine, which is what Epic licenced and sold to game developers and it became the most success videogame engine.
I think over a thousand games have been made with it, and is on its 5th version currently. So they did alright out of it really!

I used to spend hours online playing Sniper Elite on the U Bahn map. Never really got into other online games. Played all the old ones like Doom but modern games are huge by comparison and I don't think I have the patience or eyesight anymore.

I’ve got quite into squad of late, I played it when it first came out and it was full on nutcases screaming at each other but it seems to have settled into a mostly coherent community now
