In the process of installing an L304 WFU unit in the place of an A10, runs the same three wires and voltage as the A10. Problem being the + - are not marked on the 42v supply. Is there any way to determine which is plus or minus? I dont want to blow the board.

as above ac wont matter. if its dc just test with a meter and will show you positive and negative for crossed polarity

Can’t get my head around that, in the welder case there is a gurt transformer, a wire goes from there to a big contactor,the trigger wire 1335 from the wfu goes to the other side of that contactor, how can it not matter?

Have a look at the coil markings on the contactor, I'm guessing it will be 42VAC, which is a popular control voltage on ESAB/Murex kit (and made spares buying expensive as it's not a popular voltage )

Tell me about it, I had about 20 to look after at one place, luckily I didn't have to pay for the spares, the company picked up the bill which I managed to reduce by buying from an electrical wholesalers instead of the local welding suppliers.
