Esab Eyetech?

A fella i used to work with bought one of these, when he started tig welding, and i was led to believe it is one of the best about. Was having a look last night and i think they were about 150-180? I am planning on buying a cheap tig (with warranty) at the beginning of next month, to see how i get on with a view to buying a higher end machine should it work out for me, and currently only have a cheap ebay special mask, would youse recommend this mask? or any other suggestions? Don't mind spending that kind of money for something of quality

most of the high end masks, use optrel lens units. That includes the esab, Boc, Lorch and the optrel ones. The lens units are first class. I know weldequip sells Esab stuff i would give him a shout on the mask as he might be able to do a good deal

I use esab eye tech, mines a basic 10-12 model, they are one of the cheaper eyetech ones, but not brilliant for low amp TIG, the higher spec'd models are better for that.

They are good helmets though, mine must be 6 or 7 years old, used day in day out and still works fine.

ive got an eye tech 2 , shade 5-13 and has grinding mode , excellent bit of kit and very comfy . Cant fault it . i was lucky got it of ebay for £115 new .

And at £200 worth every penny, lovely for low amp Tig work or plasma cutting

I,ve got the eye tech 1 5-13 had it for about 18 months now brilliant helmet,if I remember right I paid about £110 for it from my local Boc shop, last one no box etc

i swear by my miller screen..

i beleive its called the ELITE .. huge window.. 9-13 shading and a "grind" setting that stops the sparks triggering the acivation...

V comfy and nice and light....

Can't think of the make of my mask right now I have it a couple of years and no problems
but it's only 9-13 so I'm a little worried that I will be learning to tig in the dark which could make it a more difficult is it possible to tig on shade 9

Wouldn't TIG with less than 9, can be damned bright, might be better off on 10 or 11...

EW 9 shade will be fine, but the problem with some masks is that they don't respond well to low DC currents, and will flash on and off, you wont know until you try, I always keep an old fashioned fixed shade bucket around just in case.

A lighter or even a grinder spark will trigger any mask, but it doesn't mean that it will stay latched in dark mode, AC and pulsed DC will be ok, but non pulsed is often too smooth for the sensors, Ive had top of the range masks that don't work and cheap ones that do,

You could always gaffa tape it onto a bike helmet or hard hat

The eyetechs have a little bar bit between the sensors and lense that can be removed, this makes it a bit more sensitive.
