Erect Nipples

Hi all,

Need a little help I am plug welding a rear quarter panel on to my car, Now the plug welds look like erect nipples! Its ok but they do take a long time to flat off afterwards. How do I make them flater?

What am I doing wrong? I have tried upping the wire feed and power but it didn't help.

I would try reducing the feed and or increasing the power, it should cause the weld pool to spread out and be flatter, you could try a circular motion with the torch if the plugs are big enough.

Will try upping the power then. The holes are 7.5mm as suggested on the tutorial.

I plug weld by starting in the middle (striking on the rear piece) and spiralling outwards to take in the edge of the hole in the front piece. This has always given me fairly flat, slightly-domed welds. I'm not sure how this technique could give the results you describe. Have you got a photo?

Bit of an update.

I have upped the power and used a circular motion as sujested and the results are much better now! Its a lot harder than I thought it would be, 75 down and only another 100 ish to go! O joy

Now keep it clean guys. Its nice and warm in my garage.
