Erattic behaviour from da air sander

Reading again, mine may do the same as your or something different -

Gradually gets slower. Kind of goes "pop" and back to full speed. Then gradually gets slower again.

Well, as I say, I'm familiar with it (albeit from some time back) and all I've ever done is spray loads of oil down the inlet.

I think water in it may be the issue. But mine only goes through one trap.

I wonder if mine was doing it when I used to use it without a trap sometimes?

Anyway, my finger of suspicion will point at water, lack of lube, and infrequent use.

Useful opinion, I'm grateful for that. I have ordered some GT-85 and will try dosing it up next week.

I've just seen that I was the original author of this thread!

So, yeah, mine seems "solved" but I've done nothing other than the gt85 application.

Thinking about it more, I suspect I was using 3-in-1 initially and the thinner gt85 is probably what sorted it.

I just spent a very dull 55 seconds timing how long mine took to stop spinning after I physically disconnected the air hose.

It would, possibly, be curious how long yours managed?

But I think the bearing and the vanes may be mostly unrelated.

The issue could be deposits of dried out or sticky oil and emulsified oil. I'd suggest brake or carb cleaner could be better than wd40 at softening and removing deposits.

What are the vanes and other internals made of in these?

I would be fearful of solvents messing with plastic parts. I'm not that familiar with brake cleaner though, so maybe it's safer than the various thinners I have knocking about?

Had an improvement today from flooding it repeatedly with GT-85. After a while it was back to speed variations so will probably let Mirka see it under warranty.

My 250l 4HP compressor is keeping up with it but it struck me that if I ship the car home as intended, I have zero chance of using the air sander on my baby compressor so perhaps I should be buying an electric sander that will be up to the job.
I looked at the Mirka offering but at £500 they can keep it as it would be cheaper to buy a big compressor!

Any suggestions on a quality product that will stand heavy use please? 150mm discs in use.

I have a cheap version of that, I rate them. It makes more sense than running the guts out of a compressor with its associated power draw.

Thanks Bob. I am inclined to buy one, £108 plus £21 tax on Ali, so may be worth a punt.

I do have LXT but wary of cordless with the work they will have to experience. Just today was a three hour session.

I have a couple cheapo Sealey ones, sporadic but heavy use. think they cost just over a £100 each about 5-6 years ago.
as you said cheaper than firing up a big compressor
