Equipment To Start Painting

im interested in taking up car bodywork spraying on my own project car's.

i have a old audi coupe that is being broken. that i can practice on.

could some one write a list of thng's ill require to get started Eg: Spray gun ...and what else?

a list would be perfect ...apoligies if i appear vague..im to god dam tired

What type of paint do you want to spray? and how much space have you got?

I use a pair of 2Hp 25ltr compressors, that live in my shed. They air is fed to the garage via a 1/2" hose to the regulator / filter. This setup provides enough air for my purposes, but I only use cellulose and synthetic so don't need an air fed mask, just a carbon filtered one.

To use things like air da's or grinders you would need a big compressor, my answer was to buy electric ones, the electric versions tend to be bigger, but they do run quieter than air ones.

As celly and sythetic are thinner than 2k paints, you can use a 1.2 - 1.4mm nozzle, which means you'll need less air. Also, if you live in a residential area, you shouldn't be using 2k paints anyway.

Conventional gun will need less air than HVLP (the HV is "High Volume"). Typical HVLP gun might want 14cfm delivered, a conventional around 7ish.
(Note the difference between delivered (FAD) air and comp displacement)

Consumables:
tack rags
filters/strainers
panel wipe
paper towels
sandpapers
sanding blocks
gloves
gunwash
might want masking tape (get proper 3M not the DIY pap). Plastic tape rocks.
List might seem long but most of these are cheap.

Might want a polisher for machine polish, but can do areas by hand esp starting out.
Might cost a bit to get set up, but will save money in the long run....

I find it interesting in that Drew and Snooper begs to differ from chippers comment, does that mean you need less air to run a HVLP gun as opposed to a conventional set up, less pressure agreed, but less FAD?.

thats why you get small hvlp units because high pressure is not required

say if i bought a 12 cfm compressor Eg; Clarke's or abac . . "probably 2nd hand from the use it get" for about £200

a reasonable good mask (say £50 -£70 ) and consumable's for say £100.

with the varying cost of paint and practice and stuff id require add another £200


already it seem's quite a cost effective and long term way of dealing with it.

the type of painting id be doing is Engine bay and interior's to start with. see how it go's then id move on from there. since the car ill be doing is alpine white (non mettalic) the colour would be easy to spot defect's or such.

ill have a look on here more tomorrow about paint spraying set up and requirment's...im to god dam tired just now

ive always wanted to be able to do my own respray's and painting as it can maybe i the future be something i could do for other people (if im any good). .

if anyone could list there type of compressor's , guns, masks Etc. . and any tip's and help would me most appreciated

Yr right HV refers to paint vol but HVLP does require a lot of air - more FAD.
See a typical fullsize HVLP guns air req's, load smore than an old conventional.

Even my mini HVLP wants 9cfm where fullsize JGA around 7cfm.
