The aerosol cans of Upol epoxy primer, although handy, work out quite expensive if you have a few large panels to do say, so I was wondering if using the "paint on" variety would work out cheaper. I know having to mix bits at a time can be a pain but price is everything in the long run. Anybody any thoughts and if so any recommendations for best price outlets?

aerosol spray paints are not economical they are expensive for a start and have a lot of thinner in there I assume you mean brushing on you can also roller it but bare in mind it will leave a textured finish which would show through any sprayed top coat unless you did a lot of flatting, if you have a compressor and spray gun that would be your best bet
its messy mixing the paint and brush applying it. I use 600ml paint measuring cups and mi 150ml at a time. I use jotun 87 wintergrade and thats mixed in the ratio of 1:4 primer:hardener. I normally use 1" paint brushes that are £0.29 each from Home Bargains. I dont clean them, just throw then away once they've been used

I was mixing 25cc to 125cc a time to paint push bike frames or parts therof;-)
A few weeks ago I got a pretty tatty looking chipped frame and I thought I would try touching it up, well who wouldn't;-)
I was mixing 2 to 5gram at a time! I bought a .01g scales to mix it.
I found it brushed OK. I was putting up to 3 coats on at a time, and letting it dry, before adding more. I built up to
paint height with epoxy and then airbrushed base coat and clear. I used a sable 000 brush, one of those things with a
couple of hairs.

If rollering you need to increase the thinner content, I often roller it and it comes out almost as smooth as spraying, your never gonna get a decent finish brushing though.
As for aerosols in my opinion they are a waste of time as they are mostly thinner.
I really don't get the mixing issues as it takes 2-3 minutes to mix ???

Its for a set of old mild steel gates that were galvanised but which have lost some of the galv. I have treated with aquasteel and am going to give them a coat of cold galv paint then thought of priming them with epoxy primer before a top coat of enamel. I have ordered some foam brushes for the galv paint as someone suggested in a thread I read in the search facility. I am wanting to know what the thinners is for the galv paint mainly for cleaning purposes. Will it need thinning for brush painting?

I buy Jotun paints online from SML Protective Coatings. If you've already bought the galv primer then I wouldn't bother with the epoxy and just put a top coat on the gates over the galv primer. If you've not bought the galv primer I'd just use an epoxy mastic and then topcoat, but if not worried about the epoxy chalking over the years I'd just paint it with the epoxy and leave it at that.
I was thinking of doing that but I read that the galv has to be primed before topcoat.

Do you mean the galvanised steel or the galvanised primer needs a primer over the top? If the galvanised steel then an epoxy mastic like Jotamastic 87 will go straight over the top. Epoxy mastics will stick better than just your standard epoxy paint as well. Pity your not near by as I have 20l of Carbozinc epoxy to get rid of as I'm not going to use it.
