Epoxy Primer

Slowly removing the old paint from my VW Beetle shell as taking it back to bare metal and trying to do it right by putting Epoxy Primer on before then doing body filler work.

So far I’ve just been using Novol Under 395 Epoxy Primer in 500ml aerosol cans as only working on it at a weekend, but been searching on here for recommendations.
I was looking at the Novol Classic car epoxy primer but only comes in 1 litre and seems quite expensive, so started looking at the Jotun 87WG which comes in 5 litre and could mix some up at the end of a day of cleaning and put a coat of epoxy on?
I can see it’s a 2 pack primer, but does it need an air fed mask or is it safe with some masks as 1K?

Sorry to say that you are not using the right stuff! You will not get proper epoxy primer in an aerosol. Fetch it off back to mare and do it again.

If you are spraying body panels, you should be using Lechler 29107. If just brushing, then Jotun will do, especially for underside areas. It is 2 Komponent but isocyanate free. Therefore standard PPE is adequate.

Its for the Nissan chassis I am blasting probably next week now. I normally use the red



but fancied a change this time so went grey I find the Jotun great to work with, you need to give it time to really cure or harden. I don't use the full face air fed mask just the mouth and nose air fed mask. And I use 1.8 tip suction gun, if I I want something to last I wouldn't use anything else others have there preference this is mine. 5liters £59.99 delivered

Difference between the two is how you intend to use it. If you are spraying body panels, you need something that is designed for that purpose and also doesn't require excessive sanding. Lechler 29107 is such a beast. The Jotun is thicker and only intended for large nozzle airless spraying. However it does brush well and leaves a thicker, rougher film which is ideal for underside / chassis work if you don't intend to do any pretty bits. Either can be left in primer for months without degradation.

I have 4l of grey in stock with fast hardener. Also the 00516 thinners.

Complete kit of 4l grey +2l hardener + 1l thinners is £67.20 + £33.48 +£9.54 and carriage if not being collected.

Lechler also stays fresh in your gun for at least 3-4 hours (standard hardener), so its great for working away at spot repairs over a period in the same way you'd use the rattle can.

87 is good stuff but if spraying and for a car I’m now going back to 80. It just lays nicer when sprayed. It doesn’t need a air fed mask, doesn’t contain isocyanates so can be used with the correct filtered mask. I buy my all my Jotun paints from SML paints online, super service.

International sell a 2k epoxy in a spray can, that is if you can find it for sale to retail. Good for small bits like weld repairs.

This was the aerosol I was advised was epoxy primer so bought 3 cans to use to cover each area after I’d cleaned it,

Guess I’ll be sanding that back to put some of the Lechler on then.

Ive been using jotun 87 and lechler on my triumph rebuild. The metal was quite pitted in a few places so I used the jotun as a filler primer and then went over it with lechler 29107 which gives a better finish out of the gun. If your metalwork is good just the lechler, if it is not then use the jotun!

You might find that thinners will fetch it off. That in itself will tell you all you need to know!

Im stripping my Moggy Truck down for its second restoration in my ownership. I put a new chassis on it back on 89 & the chassis arrived sprayed with hammerite, (yeah i know its junk) Anyway i stripped all the hammerite off as it was too brittle & was chipping off in sheets.
The whole chassis & underside of the car was done with two pack zinc rick epoxy & epoxy pitch made by a local supplier Hamptons paints (long gone). It has protected the truck well but after 29 years its starting to lift here & there, the metal is good underneath It just seems to have gone hard & brittle & chips off easily, stripping with the power scraper is easy.
Now i hear great things about Jotun 87 & am liking the idea of using that. I have used jotun paints on boats several times so am familiar with the stuff
Has anyone used the Jotun zinc rich epoxy as a first coat or is this overkill? Im 59 now & dont want to have to do it again!

Jotun don’t do a zinc epoxy as far as I know, they do a aluminium one though. They don’t bond to the substrate as well as the standard so I personally would just go for the standard.

I ordered some of this to try, with the ebay discount its 9 quid. It will do for the lathe guards and garden stuff. Epoxy is not normally 1:1 ratio, so is it proper stuff?

You can get 1:1 epoxy, Jotun do a version called smartpack.
