Hoping there are some people more knowledgeable than me on roofing (not that that would be difficult). I have offered to help my father put a new roof on a flat garage on the side of his house (he offered to make the new woodwork for the Morris Minor I am currently restoring - so a good trade!)
I can find plenty of sites that will put together the list of parts needed etc but was hoping someone could provide come pointers.
It is a flat wooden roof about 30ft long and just over 8ft wide with a house along one long edge, a gutter across one short edge and the other 2 sides are built up to stop water flowing over. About 20 years ago we re-felted it and no leaks to date, but the felt is getting old so time for a recovering, plus he would like to add some insulation.
Can anyone assist with the following:
Are there any brands to go for or to avoid, Firestone seems to be one of the more popular brands?
Is there any point in going for the thicker rubber (no one ever walks on the roof and there should be no risk of things falling on it etc)
When adding insulation do we need to put down batons and leave an air gap to the old roof?
What thickness of OSB should be put on top of the insulation, we have prices for 12mm and 18mm (but the 18mm is heavier to lift up)
Does to old felt have to be removed first or can it just sit under the new insulation?
I would be grateful for any good advice people can offer.
