engine test stand

as anyone ever built one?
am looking at making one as boys want to learn about fixing cars and thought it be easier to teach them about engines if its out on a stand.

Hi l made one years back for testing vw beetle engines,l mounted a gearbox onto a stand,had a place for the battery to sit in,a bit for a jerry can for petrol and a pressure gauge mounted on the side and was wired up to start off a switch.

When I did my C&G 383 the college used to get engines from a local breakers and we'd use them for stripping, assessment and rebuild. In the process we'd build simple frames that included a battery tray and exhaust hangers so that the engines could be run afterwards. My 'team' got an Escort 1.6 and I did the frame design - I seem to think it was all 50mm angle, just two square/ rectangular trays one above the other with legs about 2 feet or so; the angle gave lots of options for welding or bolting brackets etc. onto.

Now I think about it, there was some sacrilege went on there... the college closed its motor vehicles department in the early 90s and everything went in skips: the Sun diagnostics equipment, a Jaguar V12...
