engine hoist?

Hi, can anyone here help. I've been looking for a 99.99 pound engine hoist. Makro had them advertised about 2 years ago, does anyone know where to get them from? They were black and yellow

OR, is it possible to buy the pistons? I'll have a go at making my own if i can't find one.

years ago i made 1 from scratch using a bottle jack for the lifting device it worked well lifted out my v6 no problems
if you do make 1 dont make the lift arm any longer then you need it, it puts more pressure on the hydraulics also make sure it will drop low and lift high enough

I bought a Draper one for £130 years ago as I had looked at making one but couldn't see any way of keeping it below this price. If you have access to free steel and a dual action hydraulic ram then go for it otherwise look round on ebay or dig a bit deeper into your pocket.

I saw the Makro ones, but didn't pay much more for a new Clarke off an eBay shop. They do seem to be a bit dearer now, around £150 delivered.

You only need a single action ram.

A double acting ram can be nice for letting down as you can be little more precise with it.

That said single acting is ok too as most jacks are single acting!

I know, but the ones you buy have dual action and are rated for the job so why settle for less? Because you are making it yourself to save 50p you should not be looking to make an inferior item. You could make an A frame and get an electric hoist from Netto for £40 just to do the job. You don't need power brakes and steering and air con in cars but it's nice to have the option.

It wont be inferior. It will work exactly the same. You only need pressure to lift. The weight will bring it down fully under control. In fact to power down would be far to fast. So unless you need to PRESS the engine into the bay power down is a waste of money.

i must say that i have never seen a dual action ram on an engine hoist
do you actually mean dual action where by it can be pressurised up / down or did pedrobedro actually mean telescopic ram where by its a 2 stage lift ?

I mean a ram which pumps on the handle's up and down stroke so it lifts twice as fast opposed to a jack which only lifts on the down stroke. The valve lets the jib down when you open it. I've never seen an engine hoist without a dual action ram.

now we know where the confusion is you mean a dual action pump attached to the ram. the ram that you refer to is only the part that does the lifting.
