Have you seen the youtube channel Life on the hulls @W.olly (formerly life on the mould) it'd probably be right up your street if you haven't. The reason I mention it though is he has a funny little homebuild hoist set up that you can hook up to a vehicle, might be worth thinking about.
You'll find it in some of his earlier video's where he is removing modules from moulds and moving moulds around to work on them.

Portable lifting kit on floating pontoons in a marina is a recepie for disaster. Hiab in the back of a pick up or such like if you can get the boat along side a sold surface.

By the time you dick about removing engine, cables etc, time to take it home service it, then take back and refit, you might as well take the boat out, service the engine, antifoul it, change anodes etc, the. Stick it back in.

Lifting bigish outboards on and off is easy on solid groung where you can walk about...not so easy hanging over the stern.

Definitely think a counterbalance shop type crane is the way to go.

Wouldn't be too difficult to adapt an engine crane, I'd have thought.

@W.olly I have one of these, less counterweight and ram that I could sell should you be interested?

A technique I've used for getting outboards on and off is to jack the front of the trailered boat up until the transom is at a suitable height, mount/unmount the engine and then lower the boat down.

If you’re doing it commercially then in all honesty, stop arsing about and get a Landy or similar with a hiab in the back. Home made job is great till you drop an outboard through someone’s hull and then you’re going to wish you’d spent money on proper kit.

Do any of the clubs you are going to have slip ways to get the boat onto a trailer?

I repair outboards, skis and inboards for a living and like you work from a van mobile or from home workshop.
I don’t get involved in service work unless the boat or engine is out of the water. A breakdown is a different matter, but yearly service work the boat or engine has to be accessible to me.
Most customers are fine with this, the ones that aren’t, unfortunately I have to say sorry try someone else.

Hopefully you can get a solution to this. But you also don’t want to be left liable if something went wrong.

I built this to lift engines out using 80x40 tubing & a length of screwed rod (basically all found materials apart from the tubing) to provide the lift.
If the mast was reversed could easily lift an outboard but as mentioned would need counterweights. Although slower than a hydraulic crane the use of screwed rod gives micrometer like precision when refitting the engine.

I have thought more on it today after reading your replies.

Sod it in a couple of words then in removing the engines myelf.

The ones that asked me for early next year i have contacted and told them they will have to remove the boat or engine, but i will still travel to them to do it of far way.



After the last few days though i have had loads of interest in GRP canopies and screens. Some scared off when i mention price but we will see what other say. maybe a dozen showing interest already.
