I love my Epco - yes it's big but as I have the room it suits me just fine. Not happy using flimsy imported over rated ones when my fingers are at risk.

Playing with tractors and JCBs I needed something substantial.

Well there's a sticker on it stating two SWLs (one for extended and one not), I think they're about the 480kg mark from memory . Ain't been inspected in years mind. Front I have no actual idea but when the house was sandblasted the pallets used were 1.75t and she had no trouble with those. I've seen somewhere 2t mentioned but I think that's mainly because over that you need a really fat driver to keep the **** down on the ground.

I know there's a safety margin built in because when it came to move my Bridgeport (minus bed and motor/head) she could take the weight on the back actor and hold it but could only lift by curling the bucket and/or lifting her **** up on the stabiliser legs. The dipper and main boom rams weren't powerful enough to lift the weight. So an SWL of ~0.5t sounds perfectly reasonable.

I've seen somewhere 2t mentioned but I think that's mainly because over that you need a really fat driver to keep the **** down on the ground.

Check how tall the front legs are and how wide they are.

It's a real pain if you can't push the crane under the car to get to the engine.....

I have had a generic 2 tonne crane for 12 years or so, use it for general lifting of heavy stuff. But I still needed to modify mine to lift stuff out of the back of hatchbacks etc because the combination of the castor height and box section meant that it was too tall to go under most cars. However, this is a welding forum.....

I cut and welded the legs to 'drop' the height. I also fitted decent castors in the muddle to make trundling it around a bit easier when the crane is folded. The billet wheels on the front were something I made up when one of the original cast iron jobs packed in.

I have just replaced the ram on mine, these seem pretty standard, and at around £35 on ebay, not really worth mending the old one.
