An engine balancer also makes it a bit easier if the gearbox is coming out with it.

I borrowed one in December to get the lathe moved and I can't give it back to its owners. Every time I say "how about I drop it off this weekend?" they say "nah - don't worry about it".

Ironically, it's starting to get in the way now...

I've got one of the cheap Chinese 2 tonne engine cranes. for occasional use in my garage it's fine, if I were using it full time in a garage then maybe I'd go for something a bit more "pro" but for me it's fine.

I have an ancient EPCO and it too lives al fresco; I have pondered whether it would be possible to make it fold up like the cheapnese ones but have not done owt about it. Once in a while it gets exercised and smeared with grease to avoid it seizing up.

ive got a 1ton clarke foldable one, CFC1000 i think it is.
was just to lift a lathe up and hold it still above a bench.
so i could take measurements to make a drip tray/stand for it to sit on.
it did its job and ive used it for many things since. pulling small tree stumps.
take out a fair few engines...
lives in garage folded up next to the press.

A few years ago a friend cleared a deceased engineers workshop, in there was a large engine crane, British built by Tangye its rated at 1 ton but could probably lift two at a pinch. We used it to shift a pile of machines out of a school & it made the job so easy! When we had finished i asked my mate if he was going to keep it, he said "no i shall sell it on", "how much" was my reply. Best hundred quid i ever spent!
It lives in my workshop & is always in the way but will pick up anything & everything including boats, i wont be getting rid of it any time soon!

I have used many a one, those epcos are ok but man you need a crane to move them the big ones must weight 600 kgs !! A guy I do work for has one and it is a two man job if it goes outside to do anything !

Cheap Chinese ones work fine but quality is hit and miss as you would expect (litterarly with some welds)

I'm yet to need to use it again since, resides under a bed now.

I had an epco on "permanent loan" it was taking too much room in the owners garage, so I stored it, after I put new wheels and a reseal kit on he rang to say his mate wanted to use it, of course he didnt have transport, I strained and got it in the trailer, drove it 8 miles and never saw it again,
Practical Classics did an article on a DIY one, I built my own after that,
and yes it gets borrowed and I have to chase to get it back.

well mine came into good use yesterday when the gearbox fell of the transmition jack as i was changing me clutch its now been movedinto the garage from the garden for good behavoir!

I use a disabled people lift on 4x4's through the front door and then with a chain down the gearlever hole to save that problem, they have multi casters on all wheels so can travel side ways etc did get an electric ram for it so can remote control it from underneath but havnt fitted it.

I put a cross bar handle on mine much easer to control also cut the chain down at the end to just one link put a lever on the valve so its easer to control as before with good load on it used to be unpredictable

thats how i put the gear box back in crain through the door and strap through the transmition tunnel gear sticks hole

First time I used a crane my brother hired one to get the motor out of his Lincoln,
the crane was brand new, we bent the arm and bent platform the jack sat on! We had
to lower the motor back in place as the thing started to collapse! The hire
shop were pretty ****** off with us; We ended up with the scaffolding and
block and tackle to get the motor out.

I made one after that.
