Engine crane

Hello everyone, my first post.

I've just bought a Clarke CFC100 Lifting Crane with 1 Tonne Capacity, to lift out my Astra engine. It's a bit extravagant forking out for something like this that won't get much use, but I like to be totally independent (I also have a mig and arc equipment, as well as a compressor to do my own car repairs). Anyway, just wondering what the average weight of a car engine is? The crane only lifts 250kg fully extended, so might be limited to smallish engines?

thats plenty for an astra type lump

That's plenty for an astra engine. I have a £30 hoist/winch from Netto with a max weight of 250kgs and I've lifted loads of engines in and out with it.
It doesn't seem to struggle and copes well

I need to change the clutch but need to take the engine out to do it - pity it wasn't the older type that just needed to remove the bottom plate to do it .

what year spec is the astra?

yep done a dozen or so astra clutchs best way to do it drop box out you could easily do it your own in couple of hours or so so much quicker ian

Engines plus gearboxes for sub-2L cars should come in at around 250kg combined.

I'm not sure if my hoist is the same - also came from Clarke. Can't imagine what I'd do without it - it's useful for so many other lifting jobs aside from engines.

My home made crane was limited to 250kg at full extension and no troble lifting a motor from an old volvo 240 (big cast iron 2.3 liter lump)

and here about to lift the engine/box from a Citroen Bx (turbo Diesel)

so you'll have no problems with your astras
