There are huge ranges of engineering epoxy type products now. Some better than others, a porous casing for example can be quite easily fixed with a belzona type stuff. I once fixed a little kx125 water pump casing that was holed through to the crankcase, due to errosion with devcon. Over twenty years and the bike is still usable, welding and machining it would have been an absolute nightmare.
I have seen large pump casings repaired with the Blezona thats to be used on the mill table, then machined, still in service thousands of hours later, pig launcher and receiver door seal surfaces built up with it and machined to save re engineering. Quality stuff shame its so expensive.
But where these repair products really excel is where you cant weld for various reasons. Horses for courses as they say.
