Engine assembly lube and Honing kit and some stuff

Hi guys.

I need to find a place that sells
engine assembly lube
cylinder bore honing/de glazing kit
head gasket sealant

Any leads ?
Preferably in the Derby area thank.

You can usually get the same one at a Motor Parts Direct depot (and many other car spares dealers I reckon). I have one - bought it to hone my lad's Fiat engine when we re-ringed it. Worked fine when the stones were lubed with plenty of paraffin.

Engine assembly lube - STP? Good quality/synthetic oil?

Does the head gasket need sealant / glue?

Head gaskets never use any extra form of sealant.

Engine assy lube, assuming you are talking petrol /diesel engines: Just normal Molygrease on plain bearings IE cam shafts etc, the normal engine's oil on the rest. You don't get any extra benefits from fancy or 'special' assy lubes.

Be carefull with glase busting kits, on modern engines if its got to that stage you need a rebore not glaze removal. One look at the pistons will tell you how worn the bores are.

The best sealants I've found are

'wellseal' non setting
'Threebond' rubberised setting thats all you need really.

Avoid the silicone gloop, people worry about it and write reams of total rubbish on internet forums about the stuff. I used for 20 years without problem, but got so fed up explaining thats its Ok if used correctly I switched to Threebond, which is acutually much better, if you can get the cap off the tube.

Silicone gloop - if your engine has an oxygen sensor in the exhaust (HEGO sensor) then avoid silicone sealers anyway as any silicone that can leach into oil may cause contamination / poisoning of the sensor over time, rendering it useless.

I´ve used head gasket spray, wich is common and normal for some cars, I use it when I install steal head gaskets on forced induction engines. This is going on my BMW 325i Turbo btw.

The cylinders are all fine and well within spec they just need minimal honing to get the marks back in.

Not used the spray stuff, but the threebond is ace for crankcase halves, thats what is was orginally designed for. Its used as standard by many manufacturers

Here's a list of motor factors in Derby. I can recommend Romac (the top one) (but I used the Mickleover branch), and I've also used Morley's. Also, Machine Mart sells cylinder honing kits, and they're on Derwent Street.

your not planning on using one of those 3 legged honer things? i found that there ace for making oval and pear shaped bores.i always prefered the christmas tree looking ones with the bobbles on the end.use a slow drill and do em in the parts washer.an engine recondiotioning place would prob charge you £20 get your block dipped at the same time to get the gunk and paint off.a blown 335 would be better.werent you building a CA powered E-dirty?
wont they have all that crap at uni?

I was hoping to find the bobble type honing kit stuff.
I did not find anything at machine mart.

I am indeed building a CA powered E30 back home, will finish it when I get back. Will keep it just north of 300hp.

I pulled the project out of uni cause we get so little time per week.

a 335i would be good, but 400hp is going to suit fine
Block is already clean.

'Bobble' hones - Known as Flexhone. Brilliant but pricey, when you can find them.

If you can find any for sale in the UK you can expect to pay about £25 for a 3"/75mm and over £40 for 4½"/115mm+ sizes.
I theink there's a few of the larger sizes on ebay at the moment.
If you can get a cheap shipping price then try a US supplier as you will probably get them 30%+ cheaper.
