UK electricity prices are around 12p per kilowatt/hour. So with your TV in standby, it will cost you the princely sum of 7p per month.
Of course, if you have an office block of mobile phone chargers then it will all add up, but I suspect that most of us only care about our home electricity consumption

A 60W lamp will cost 17p a day to run, or just over £5 a month.

A 150A MIG welder would theoretically cost £14.40 to run in a day if you ran it at 100% for the full 24 hours with no breaks which, of course, isn't going to happen I guess that if you did about 45 minutes of welding in total at the weekend, then the actual electricity cost would be around 45p!

That 0.8w is so that when you sit your **** down in front of it you can press a button and the TV will come on; the 60w for the microwave is the power the magnetron emits not, the power consumed.

Ah - in that case, it's taking £2 a month or £24 a year. Which? did some tests recently that showed that some TVs could consume ten x the power in standby mode of some other TVs.

22w in standby, how old is your telly? My 2005 Sony uses less than 1w in standby.

All our trackside lighting is automatically turned off at breaktimes, but as we have literally thousands of lamps across the site turning them off for about 90 mins in every 24 hours must save the company a few bob.

What is a "plugtop power supply". Cannot understand the bit in bold above.

plugtop power supplys, usally 5, 6 , 9 or 12 volt output. that plug straight into a 13 amp socket. most of them are cheep nasty powersupplys with very cheep transformers inside. hence they consume a relativly large amount of energy when not supplying a load, they also draw a lot of energy to supply relativly littel when they are working. if it's supplying for example 1 amp at 12 volts thats 12w of power but quite a lot of them will get warm ( even when doing nothing ) and thats wasted energy

I'm surprised a good portion of stuff ever gets passed over here for sale. An acquaintance who used to work in a QA role came across some abysmal stuff in his time there. The whole CE marking thing and suchlike is a joke, half the time.

A lot of electrical stuff sold on ebay is imported from China and carries a "CE" mark. Some is genuine and has undergone type safety checking, however a lot of electrical goods (especially extension leads and the "wall-wart" power supplies we're talking about here) are poorly made dangerous rubbish.
Some Chinese manufacturers state that their CE mark denotes "Chinese Export" and should not be confused with European CE markings - make of that what you will.

I had a Chinese PSU and the plug pins weren't shrouded, it didn't have a fuse and the cable wasn't attached securely. I replaced the plug with a proper one.
