I'm guessing that most of your experience and training was on conventional machines and / or machines with appreciable backlash?
There is a place for both methods depending on the circumstances, and as you intimate there are excellent guides by some of the manufacturers for those that are uncertain - just an example at random:

Very simple article but very explanatory, cheers for that. Theres a bit of logic in there.
So the general concensus is (according to the article), 'climb milling' is the way to go...but only really suitable for newer machines. Older machines tend to have too much backlash.
I mostly use conventional milling on most work I do, but that is using old machines. When at times I have used the climb milling method, I have found powerfeed most important on a slow feed rate. Doing it manually usually ends with a poor finish, often caused by the difficulty to controling the job being pulled along by the cutter.
